I've been having problems linking to an individual posting lately. Yes I do know how to do it, and have done it on numerous occasions.

But I've experienced problems a number of times lately,..the most recent this morning. I tried it 3-4 times on the same posting, but when I click on the title of the individual posting, it takes me to the original title of the subject thread, rather than the title of the individual reply I am trying to link to ??

Is this the one?

Is this the post you were referring to?

https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/weekend-photo-fun-13-to-15-12195602

The link you posted in the other thread with the quote from that post was not right - it was missing the anchor (the #comment-< comment number> part) and the page number was wrong.

The easy way to make a link to a post is to make note of the page number query param in the url (the ?page=3 part) when you're looking at the page the post is on, then click on the subject of that post.  That tries to open the post, but the url is wrong - it's missing the page query param (e.g. it comes up like this  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/weekend-photo-fun-13-to-15-12195602).  So, insert the page query param back in and you've got what you want -  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/weekend-photo-fun-13-to-15-12195602.

Eventually perhaps the site will get fixed to put the proper url on the subject box in a post, but until then, that's how you get it.

Thats the one

Yes Ken, that is the latest individual posting I was trying to link to, but when I clicked on the SUBJECT of that post it took me to wrong page, .... to try and insert the page number into the text/title of that post?

Manually edit url

Yup Brian, you need to manually edit the url to get a good url to a specific post.  Re-read what I wrote above, hopefully it makes sense.  Experiment with doing it and I think you'll get it.

Try this

Hi Brian, all,

I know that you are pretty good with links generally, but here's what works for me. I 'll bust it down into smaller chunks for others less familiar with adding links to their postings on here

I usually work with multiple tabs open in Windows using Chrome, but this approach should work for you with other browsers. It has for me in my Corrimal thread on here. OK, that link was easy - it was a link to a topic rather than an individual posting, but I'll use the thread to illustrate how this works.

  • The first tab is the main tab I'm working in and where I want to put the link to a specific topic.
  • The second tab display the topic I want to link to - it provides the first part of the new link.
  • the third tab is generated from the second tab - it provides the comment number to complete the link.

How it works

in the first tab I have 2 options - I can create a link that is "out in the open" or I can create a link that lives behind selected words in my new post in Tab 1. Option 1 is easy I just create the link without highlighting any words. It turns out something like this:

One of the first pieces of machinery to go underground was the coalcutter.  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/corrimal-colliery-and-its-incline-a-different-slant-on-rails-12206968

But let's say I want to talk about a specific something and don't want to bust up the flow of my sentence with a link in the middle of it. So I highlight some words where I want the link attached - like "the coalcutter", and click the link icon in the toolbar.

  1. In the link pop-up, from the second tab, copy in the link from the second tab into the URL field but do not click OK to complete the link. The url field should look something like this  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/corrimal-colliery-and-its-incline-a-different-slant-on-rails-12206968
  2. Swap back to the second tab, For the post you want, Right click and open a new tab
  3. In the new tab, copy everything to the right of #comment from the field at the top of the Tab 3 webpage
  4. go back to Tab 1, place the cursor in the URL field and use the rt arrow key to move your cursor to the right of what is already in there. To the right of the page number, paste in the comment number you've brought back from the third tab. CAUTION - do not use the spacebar to move to the end of the URL field - you will damage what you already have in the URL field.
  5. You now have everything you need in the URL field, Click OK to complete the link, and you're done
  6. Close the tabs you don't need when you've finished your new posting.

So what's this option look like

One of the first pieces of machinery to go underground was the coalcutter.

Hopefully that will help you and others with creating useful links on the MRH forum,

Regards,

John Garaty
