A couple of new N-Scale building projects are now underway for the ATSF Paradigm Division. The first project will be a replacement passenger station for San Angela (Lawrence, KS).  The replacement station will be designed to resemble the station that was built by the Santa Fe in the early1950s to replace the earlier one that burned down. The new station will replace an Atlas kit that just looked out of place to me.

The second project will be the addition of the Broadway Bridge over the Union Station (KCUS) west yard throat. The bridge will extend from the wall to the edge of the train table and will have a slight jog to get between the City Ice & Santa Fe Freight House. The style of the bridge will resemble the actual bridge using photos from the 1970s. The majority, if not all, of the two projects will be designed & printed on my 3D printers.

Can’t wait to see the printed results!

The family laptop has been commandeered by my wife for a class she is teaching.  I’ve spent the last month working out an iPad Mini 4 3D printing workflow.  The last step is figuring out how to save the gcode file to a micro SD card so my Printrbot Play can print without monitoring.  I think the answer is the Kingston Mobilelite G3 at $25.  Gotta wait a couple weeks for my birthday to get it.

The New Projects

Thanks for your comments.  How do you like your Printrbot?

The first project, San Angela (Lawrence) station has been completed except for window glazing & people/accessories that will come later.  It is already on my YouTube channel & I will post it here on MRH next weekend.

The second project, the Broadway Bridge, is in work and will probably be posted in mid-September.  It is a bit more complicated as it requires support piers (7 each), roughly 3 ft of steel truss substructure plus road decking, and associated railings. All of these have to be printed, test fit, modified if required, & test fit again before painting. Additionally, the entire structure must be removable from the layout in one piece so I can either clean or work on the track.  The other bridge, Main Street, can be picked up in one piece and removed from the layout already.

Printrbot

Oh, I love my Printrbot Play.  I’m so disappointed they went out of business.  My wife and daughter gave it to me for Christmas I guess 4 years ago now.  They’re the internet research queens, and bought the one most used by schools at the time.  It’s built like a tank, is easy to work with, has a self-leveling bed, and 4 years later runs exactly like it did on the first day.  My only complaint is I could sure enjoy a larger print bed (100mmx100mm)!

Interesting

Sorry to hear that about a company that produced a good printer.  There are a lot of new FDM style printers around at very reasonable prices. I have been pleased with both of my XYZ Printers, the mini (5.9" cube print volume) & the 1.0 Pro (7.9" print volume with heated/enclosed bed).
