Yea, You're Right!

Thanks for the heads up, Rick.  My mind is still on the storm (Barry) and it's aftermath down here (thunderstorms and tornado warnings).

this week

I painted up an old Hallmark brass caboose for my dad last week.   The proto pic is from the Nick Molo Frisco /Katy book.   It still needs the tow cables on the sides and some glazing but its close.

FYI, for any of you in or near Ohio, the Armstrong museum and the city of Wapakoneta is doing events all week for the 50th anniversary.  The Ohio History Connection is also showing the original broadcast of the landing on the 20th at their main building at the Ohio State Fairgrounds.

Thanks,Steve

A Little Bump

Giving the thread a little bump as it has fallen a couple pages back . . . don't want anyone not able to find it when trying to post their great photos!

Dome chair car 9450 'Silver Bridle'

Dome chair car 9450 'Silver Bridle' sits at Union Terminal in October 1972. Built by Budd for the CB&Q in 1948, it is now owned by the newly-created National Railroad Passenger Corporation and is assigned to the North Coast Hiawatha.

President Richard Nixon reluctantly signed the bill creating Railpax in late 1970, and he expects it to fail soon. But the directors of new 'Amtrak' company tell us they will be turning a profit within three years. Only time will tell which side is correct.

Great shot.

Mark that looks great.  Do you have an overall shot of their station by any chance?

 Thanks, Steve

Mark....Really?

Really a model? I bought it hook line and sinker. I'm still not totally convinced. I gotta ask......At least the train station was photo edited in......please say yes. I'm about to pack it in if someone actually built that to scale.

Incredible Place (NAPM)

Their photo site is on Flickr ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/napmltd) and the station is shown in many shots.

You might be if you owned some of Broadway Limited's nice California Zephyr passenger cars.  They did a run a few years back in Amtrak phase 1 pointless arrow.  I've got a set to model the Rio Grande Zephyr and another for the full California Zephyr and a couple of the Amtrak painted sleepers for my Amtrak San Francisco Zephyr.

The station scene is very realistic eh?

Pretty darn amazing! That club looks like it would be worth a trip to see. Maybe one of these days when I'm in St.Paul a road trip to see this layout and an outing to a Brewer's game will be put on the "to do" list.

That is one great, atmospheric photograph. I also enjoyed your website. The infrastructure section was particularly interesting to me and as a gimpy old guy I thank you for putting that handrail in first! On stairs like that I'd have to slide down on my butt without a hand hold.....not a pretty sight!

Dome chair car 9450 'Silver Bridle'

I've added a photo of the North American Prototype Modelers main depot and train shed to the end of this message.

NAPM club member Dan Christensen (a now-retired architect) scratch-built the train shed. It is 1/8-mile long.

The depot? The basic building material for that was Lego blocks.

What I posted was easy, it only took three steps:
1. Somehow convince a fantastic model railroad club to invite and then accept me as a member;
2. Snap the photo!
3. Come up with a creative caption.

In reality, step 2 was just a little more complicated. I used an iPhone 8 Plus to take a series of 20 photos with the focus distance set differently for each shot — I had the camera positioned in a 'upside-down' position so the lens was close to layout height. Then when I got home I use Helicon Focus to 'focus stack' the 20 images into a single image with good depth-of-field-from near-to far. Then I used Adobe Lightroom (no Photoshop!) to lighten the shadows under the car to bring out some of the detail.

NAPM is private and not open to the public on a regular basis. We have one open house a year, usually the Saturday evening of the NMRA's 'Trainfest' in West Allis (near Milwaukee) in November.

ZIL-130

Its almost the end of the week but I've just finished a little Russian truck (minus the cargo tray which I will have yet to scratch build).

One of my inspirations for modelling Russian narrow gauge was the computer game Spintires/Mud Runner. Although no rail was in the game, it had Russian trucks driving in the mud carrying logs. What more could you ask for? Just add trains!

Below is a screenshot from the game and a pic of my recreated version. Inspiration comes from  all sorts of sources
