Thanks

nice quick video, thanks. I am not a train chaser but I did check out Clyman, Wi. today to see if that would be a good spot for me when 4014 comes into Wisconsin. I thought maybe catching it passing under the old cement coaling Tower on the main would be a great shot, but unsure. I figure this maybe one of those once or twice life time events and I have the time.

Nice video man, thanks for posting. despite personal circumstances, it looks like I'm going to be able to make the trip up to Boone along with my pastor, so needless to say I'm getting pretty excited!!!! I will try my darndest to get plenty of footage of 4014 and the museum there. Can't wait to get everything edited and posted!!

once or twice lifetime events

That was my thought exactly.

I'm glad I was able to make it

It was a treat!

Thanks.

I'm not a big steam fan or foamer myself, but this is such an Iconic locomotive that I didn't want to pass it up. I thought about running to Boone to catch it, seeing it go over the Kate Shelly would have been awesome!

I hope you (and others) get a chance to see this wonderful piece of living history.

The above is true. Never had the hots to have a BB model... but I can understand why there are those that do.

Regardless, if it is going to pass within striking distance of where I live, I really owe it to myself to make the effort to go see this behemoth.

Avoiding Crowds

I was hoping the Clyman area would be a good spot but checking last night on Google Earth and following the tracks, 4014 wont be there. So, I did get to see an area I was hoping to check out someday. Investigated the town of Clyman which took 30 seconds but was only 18 miles from the outlet stores on Wi. 26 and I94. Took about 30 minutes at the Tower.

Why they leave these concrete coaling towers over the mainline is beyond me? I know of a few in Illinois with the closest to me in Madison, Wi, being Dekalb, Il.

Next spot for me to check out will be Friesland, Wi which is on Allen’s UP schedule with a time. My wife will go with to check out the spots as we can visit and explore the towns along the way, but when the BB comes through, she says she will be at home.

Very nice

Wish I could have been there.

I have seen the one in Scranton, PA three times. I can only imagine that thing under steam at speed and the heat it must generate.

Those videos were great.

A friend was with me and was quite impressed with that engine.

They left the towers because

They left the towers because it cost so much to take them down.

Cost

Rob, I have seen that answer for years and thank you. You would think the cost it would have taken in 1960 to tear down will have been a lot less then today’s costs even if inflation is added. Someday they will crumble and that cost may really be great and disruptive. It sure looks neat though.

Concrete coaling towers

Those things were built for the ages.  Bringing one down would be an operation of days, with the tracks under and bypassing the site shut down for the duration.  Your current Class 1 railroads are laying off everyone they can to appease the almighty shareholder, they won't waste any thought to dropping something that doesn't want to be moved.

Another thing to consider is abandonment and spin offs

If the line in question gets spun off to a local or regional it becomes an issue for someone else. If the line gets abandoned and does the rails to trails thing it also becomes the problem of someone other than the railroad. Or if it does get torn down at that time it does not disrupt any traffic.

First thought "What the...?!?"

"...But first, a word from our sponsors."  I was about ready to TV brick the screen, when I realized what was happening.  Great and clever way to add some extra action to the video.  Thanks for sharing.

The Big Boy

A couple of years ago my wife and I visited the USA and spent a wonderful month touring from Denver via The Grand Tetons, Yellowstone ending up in Glacier National Park returning from Kalispell.  One thing I insisted on was to visit Cheyenne to see, of course, the incredible BIG BOY, words are insufficient to describe this mighty machine.   I have subsequently purchased 2 N scale models for my layout.  I only wish I could have seen it in steam but sadly no.   Great memories nontheless.

Having spent a lot of time in

Having spent a lot of time in steam locomotive cabs as an engineer pilot during my WC days I can tell you it isn't much fun after the first hour or so. They ride rough, they are dirty, extremely noisey, and you constantly have to look out for dumb people on the track when moving and swarming all over when stopped. At the end of 12 hours you are exhausted and want to never see the thing again. But, for that first hour or so...it's a dream come true. This is the reason many steam engineers never looked back when steam went away and they began to enjoy the comfort, cleanliness and quiet of diesels

In truth it's much more enjoyable watching these locomotives/trains run by and then head for air conditioning and cold drinks.

In a couple of hours the 4014 will pass within 800 feet of our home so I likely, will wander down to the crossing to watch it pass by...then head home. However, I will also watch with humor as the chasers try to avoid hitting each other's vehicles as they rush off to another viewing spot. I have already notified our local police and fire department of ensuing potential crowd control and vehicle challenges.

Okay, okay I confess...4014

Okay, okay I confess...4014 is a great engine and the UP a nice train.

Yes, I went down the 800 feet and took a photo when she passed by our home.

I still like smaller steam locomotives on museum lines, though.
