We're arriving tomorrow evening

Patty and I are arriving tomorrow evening. Then I give clinics all day long on Wed - five in total. Thursday, our new MRH Staffer Eric Hansmann shows up in the morning and then we set up at the train show all day. That evening, I have one last clinic to give. Then Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is the National Train Show! Post your questions and we'll try to do some quick live broadcasts on YouTube getting you some answers (assuming web reception is decent at the show).

Structures?

It seems like new item reports lean very heavy towards new locos and freight cars.

It would be nice to see some new structures also. Industrial being my 1st choice followed by retail types.

Thanks,   Jack

The fun is in finding them

I am absolutely not opposed to showing new structure kits when I can find them - usually that means Walthers. I was very happy with finding an announcement for a Fos Scale Models kit at the Railroad Hobby Show (Amherst) earlier this year.

Smaller companies.

I find that the smaller manufacturers usually have the more inventive products.

I currently have enough Locomotives (I know hard to believe).

I would be interested in any older N scale rolling stock (TOC19 as they now call it). Also old structures and detail parts.

But I know I am in a minority.

N scale

Ok I'll say it, please hold the laughter... Anything N is always appreciated.

Think before you post, try to be positive, and you do not always have to give your  opinion……

We will have new N scale

We will have new N scale structures at the show. Not sure how well the build ups have survived the trip as know some will need repair. 4000 miles in boxes in a hot van for going on three weeks has not been nice to them, Did the N scale convention in Chicago  a week and a half ago.  But will unload them today and see if I can do repairs as needed.

Gonna be a really late arrival!

We’re driving to Salt Lake because I’m taking some TOMA modules to display. Plan was to get on the road between 6:30am and 7am and do the 12.5 hour drive to Salt Lake. Well ... we didn’t even get out of town and we got a flat tire. Still waiting on Les Schwab to come do the roadside thing cuz the tire is REALLY flat and can’t drive on it. We’re about half a mile from home and it’s now 9:10am. Starting out be a REALLY long day ... :-(

Turn around

Go home, have lunch then start out again. Stop tonight and sleep. Aggravation from road travel is not worth it. Be safe.

Made it!

We finally got on the road at 10:30 am, just 3 hours later than planned ... and we drove the full way without incident. Given the late start, we just bought some sandwiches and goodies and only stopped for gas or potty breaks. Got to the SLC hotel at 12 midnight (we’re staying in Murray, halfway between the convention hotel and the National Train Show venue). I have an 8 am Clinic this morning, so we need to boogie. Heading out now ... 7am here. The convention hotel should be 10 min away, but it’s downtown and the morning commute time so gotta go!

I watched Ken's Podcast (What's Neat This Week #81) thanks for the tips.

structure kit makers - scales other than HO

I'd be interested to hear news from any of these structure kit makers:

Banta Modelworks

BTS

Imagine That Laser Art

Rail Scale Models

Wild West Models

These guys make great kits, and they make them available in multiple scales, including O and S scales.

How's the show going?

Really good! The MRH Store was very busy yesterday, and the SL 1.5 (my terminology for the modules that are now due to be disassembled upon return) are bringing people in to talk and run the trains around.

I'm having fun discovering stuff - need an N scale (or HO scale) toilet? USA Plastics can take care of you.... as well as with about 50 other small detail parts. I'm going to buy some bike racks, I think.

Alpine Models is selling doors, windows and other parts for $1/per, and has a limited number of kits at $5/per.

There are two tool shops here... I'm restraining myself at the moment, but that won't last. Yankee Dabbler, Spring Creek, and Star Hobbies are only three of the general vendors here.

Some of you might know I'm the guy in the 'Still plays with trains" shirt on the MRH website (has that been over 10 years ago now?) Well, I bought a more "dignified" version of the shirt at one of the shirt dealers - it's a polo with "Still plays with trains" over the pocket.... of course, there is a graphic of 4014 on the back....

Patty and my wife Laura were basically glued to the MRH Store counter all day, and Joe and Eric were having fun talking MRH, Running Extra, and TrainMasters TV to passerby.

Onto Saturday!

Layouts

Jeff, I'm assuming you're going to try and capture a lot of the layouts there. I've heard that there were several NMRA contest winners on the Free-mo layout this year that you might want to check out in detail. Also the layout is completely different than previous years, not your typical round-round or point to point. If time permits, ask the Free-mo guys about the "pay to play" event in Evanston, 85 miles away from NTS as they had way more modules than they could fit in the NTS assigned space!

Today's "schedule"

It's silly to try and schedule anything during an NTS - you've got 15,000 changes in schedule in one room.

My goal for today is to finish up with manufacturers/vendors and get started on the layouts, finishing up with them on Sunday. I don't know when (or if they have already) announced the module contest winners, I usually find them by blind luck.

More modules than can fit? That has to get interesting, deciding who stays and who goes...

@Jeff Is there a website

Jeff, is there a website for that USA Plastics? A google search only turns up USAPlastics.com which is an industrial, bottles & caps, large garbage and fluid cans, site.
