A couple of pictures from the weekend

Good morning,

There was a small modular display at our church's fellowship hall this weekend in Strongsville, OH. Here are a couple of pictures from the event.

PRR H49 Covered Hopper

Here is my PRR H49 in an eastbound Penn Central freight train. Modeled from an Exactrail 4427 car, Plano end cages, and my own PRR decals. See the Plano site for more info. The RR crossing sign is from Rix.

Mark - I love your narrow-gauge shot.  Great scene!  Those DRGW Mikes were my favorite NG power.

Alex - That's an impressive scratchbuild.  Well done!

PCfan60 - I always enjoy pics of your layout.

Tom - Great kitbash!  I never would have guessed the source.

Chris - Really nice seeing another scene on your layout.  More please.

For me this week, I finally got around to reworking a Walthers 5125cf PD covered hopper.  Here's a "before" pic of the car, grabbed from http://burlington.up.seesaa.net/image/05IMG_0014-thumbnail2.jpg :

A prototype Joe Rogers pic of the car I modeled, NAHX 550755, from http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1165712, shot in 2008:

I'm not aware of another source for this car in plastic, so I decided to replace the heavier details to make this fit in a bit better among other cars on the layout.  The previous owner of the model had replaced the running boards with Plano etched parts, so my work was limited to snipping the end bracing and stirrup steps away and adding new piano wire ladder rungs, modified A-Line stirrups, Tichy grabs, and Detail Associates air hoses.

A couple model pics of the car back in service:

I didn't weather or tag it quite as heavily as the prototype since the only prototype pic I had to work from was shot three years after my layout's era.

I had so much fun building this, but I just noticed that I lost my little door, and I have no idea where!

Another great round of photos, all.

Really enjoy seeing photos of Greg's Rutland layout. (Been a Rutland fan since I discovered it in the mid-1970s.)

An Older Atlas Boxcar Weathered.

This car was produced back in the 70's and for some reason I bought one even though it is too modern for my 1968 era!

I weathered it up and will give it to a friend for his 80's era layout.

I like having a few pieces of unique rolling stock. Great stuff, everyone!

Long boxcars

Really nice work on those long boxcars.  Stupid question, but...did prototypes for those really exist?  I'd never seen anything like them before, but don't know rolling stock well, especially from the 60s and prior.

One more from me:  BN 460649, an Athearn FMC 4700cf covered hopper.   This started life in full Burlington Northern lettering with the larger herald, a twin to the car to the right in the model photo below.  I removed the lettering, herald, and reporting marks using tissue paper soaked in Micro Sol, then renumbered the car for one of the plain-scheme FMCs that visited my prototype in the month I model.  (I like to model car ratios accurately for my era and prototype, and recently went through all the BNSF and KCS covered hoppers that served my prototype's grain elevators to determine the most common car types and paint schemes.  This lettering change/renumber is my last step toward bringing my model roster in line with those ratios.)  Weathered with PanPastels.

Long boxcars

I knew about the 86’ high cube auto parts boxcars, but I didn’t know there were what looks like maybe plate C extra long boxcars.  I guess for bulky but light stuff it bigger makes sense.

Some of the 86 footers are still in use - there’s an Anchor Hocking glass plant in Lancaster, OH that uses a bunch of them to move glass products to a large warehouse on the other side of town.  A video (not embedded since this is really a bit off topic for this thread):
