Emperor of the North

Hello friends and modelers.

This is my first post on MRH. My name is Glenn Holland, I'm a young mechanical engineer in the rail industry, and my modeling efforts are done with Lego bricks. I've been building and seriously modeling trains for about 12 years now.

Here is my newest model: I chose the Buffalo Creek & Gauley 2-8-0 Consolidation #13.

I began designing the model in February this year and brought it to completion this past weekend, right at five months of build time. It runs smoothly using a combination of Lego's home-grown motor system and a custom battery. I have also added a sound card from Dallee Electronics.

The model is about 97% pure Lego. The remaining 3% is comprised of custom third party pieces, the non-Lego battery, the sound system, and the connecting rods, which I designed myself and printed on Shapeways.

Looks great considering it’s LEGO

The sides of the tender have a more realistic look than the smooth and flat one piece of scale models. Real tenders  are many pieces of steel riveted or welded into a single unit that is close to a flat surface but have slight dents and rises in them.

the neat thing is that it really looks like a BC & G engine.   Nailed it!   Very well done.

Thanks everyone!

Wow, thanks to everyone for the comments and compliments!

Tim L.- You'd be surprised how many times I hear something like that at conventions!

Lancaster Central 17- You're the first person to notice that detail. When I was modeling the engine I actually did study the patterns on the tender walls and tried to replicate that as best I could in my model.

DHfan73- Thanks! It's just years of practice.

NevinW- One of the hardest things about modeling with Lego is capturing the "essence" of a locomotive, I feel it's seldom done properly. I'm pleased to hear you think I did it this time!

LEGO FTW!

Beautiful work sir!  I was deep into LEGO Model Trains back in the day. (2007) Even had my own LEGO Model Railroad in my basement.  I gave that up after dropping about 300 bucks on green bricks to build a mountain and train tunnel... Turned to HO scale model railroading at that point.

Anyway, I love the work you've done here and thanks for sharing it with the rest of us!

(Here is a shot of my SW 1500 MOC that still sits on my desk to this day!)

Very Cool

Great looking build.  I always enjoy the Lego layouts at train and Lego shows.

Our house has 3 layouts, 2 HO and my son's Lego layout.
