SC April, 2019 update

Tim,

You had to have made those scrap loads yourself, correct? You just use pieces of metal scarp and make a mold?

Good video

Loved the video, I'm the only who made the comment about maybe needing a tetanus shot after just looking at the gons. Your empty gons look perfect, just the right color and consistency of rust from a previous load.

I like the operation samples in your videos, nicely done.

I did notice the nice working derail you had and mentioned it in the text in the video, but Alexander Scale Models is the one thing pointed out in your video that isn't in the list of links you put in the video description.  (The link is  https://alexanderscalemodels.com/). Oh and if it's not obvious, I find it incredibly useful that you say what the source is for various things you point out in the video.

Tim, you mentioned earlier that the Scale Sounds have installed some keep alives for you. How do you rate these?

If my frogs are unpowered will they provide enough juice to cross with out stalling?

Scale Sound Systems

Hi Jeff,

I actually supplied the LokSound decoders and ESU Power Pack current keepers and JT at Scale Sound Systems did the install along with adding LED lights and ditchlights and those amazing speakers.

The current keepers are definitely part of my new standards for my equipment and I love the fact that now manufacturers such as Scale Trains are noticing their importance when it comes to new offerings. If you use DCC+Sound then having current keepers added is a good way to avoid interruptions over dead spots and dirty track.

I enjoy watching your layout and how a pro operates.
Your layout looks nice, your cars looks nice weathered. And yes, I also took notice of those empty cons.
I do have some questions for you.

About the switching speed:
For me it looked fast, but is that the speed you do run your real trains?
And then, what would a normal switching speed be?
Is the speed different when switching the yard tracks than when pulling or setting out cars into an industry like the scrap yard?

About the ESU Keep Alive:
Does this work well?
I have seen some comments on issues with this. Comments I of course have forgotten now 
Was it something about the speed got slower when the power came from the KeepAlive?

Just one more thing with your great videos you easily could do better, that is in my opinion, that is my old ears:
I find that the music at the beginning and end are very much loader than the rest of the video. I have to turn the sound up after the intro when you are speaking and then down at the end.
Maybe you could balance the intro and the end music better to the sound level of the rest of the video.

Still I am looking forward to your videos from the workshop and the layout.

Switching speeds and Current Keepers

Hi KnuT,

Normally, I can run a lot smoother and slower when I’m not filming. As far as the prototype goes, real GP38s can load up and move pretty quick compared to modern six axles. You’d be surprised. One reason why 2nd Gen EMD Units are some of my favorite engines to run. Especially when you’ve got a great pair of SD40-2s.

Since I run ESU decoders exclusively on the SC it makes more sense to use their Power Pack current keepers vs TCS Keep Alive’s. Although you can make the TCS Keep Alive’s work with LokSound decoders there can be issues when it comes to programming the decoders. Folks say you have to unplug the Keep Alive’s first whereas it is not necessary with the ESU Power Packs.

I completely understand about the intro and ending music. That’s something I hope to take care of when I start filming with my new camera.

And I must admit that I sometimes do speed up a bit if I am in a hurry, (but don't telle anyone )
I am only a very non profesional model railroader, wanting to learn as much as possible.
