The RPM-East prototype modeler meet kicked off tonight with operating sessions at a number of layouts around Pittsburgh. I operated on Roy Ward's HO scale West Virginia Central & Pittsburgh Railroad and had a great time.

Roy's modeling is influenced by many trips railfanning the Western Maryland in West Virginia when it was an active line.

Coal moves constantly on the layout as it moves from mines to prep plant, and on to distant markets.

A couple of coal branches feed hoppers into Slaty Fork, seen below. Northbound trains move coal to the prep plant at Asher Glade for cleaning and sorting. Crews spot these raw coal loads and pull clean loads from the prep plant to haul north to Greenwood Yard in Connellsville, PA, seen in the first image.

The RPM clinics start tomorrow and I expect the model display room will fill up. I'll post additional updates as I can.
