Folks,

My wife and I are going on a cruise from Singapore to Athens and will have an extra day or two in those two cities.  Most time will be taken up sightseeing, of course, but I'm wondering if there are any good model railroad shops in either of those cities?  A Google search showed several in Singapore; wondering if anyone has any first hand knowledge about any of them?

Thanks,

Toy store in Athens

Al,

I visited Athens a couple of years ago. Not sure if there are any train/hobby shops there (does Google show anything?), but we did stumble on a two (maybe 3?) story toy store called Moustakas, near the Monastiraki Metro Station, just north of the Acropolis. I took the kids inside for a look while my wife waited outside. I can't remember if they had any train-related stuff in there or not, but it was a fairly large store, and I remember they had some LEGO sets at what seemed to be reasonable prices.

Honestly, unless you're looking for some specific Greek or European models, I think there's more than enough non-train-related stuff to see and do in Athens. Just enjoy being there, and walk around and look - there are 2000-year-old Greek and Roman ruins and beautiful churches, quite literally around every corner! It's truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Never been to Singapore, so can't say much about that. I hear it's very clean, though

Athens stores,

There are a few model-train shops in Athens that i am aware of. As Dan said, they cover European / Greek prototypes (for the most part).

Thanks, Dan and Yannis

Appreciate the feedback.  Yes, for sure we will spend most of our time soaking up the history and culture of those countries, and the others in between.  Still, the intrigue of finding a hobby shop still calls me....

Athens Info, Al, I understand

Athens Info,

Al, I understand all about the intrigue of finding a hobby shop in a new town/city. I suppose you will mostly visit the city-center / downtown area so, with respect to the downtown hobby shops, most that i know of are located in Ippokratous street. If i am not mistaken, one is a model train shop and the rest cater mostly to scale models (dioramas, aircraft models, military vehicle models etc).
