Been working on a refueling station for the engine house. It’s a modified Con-Cor (Piko) Cambria Fuel Rack. Nice little kit with lots of detail, piping, tanks and associated parts. Still determining which of those parts will be used here.

Major mod was adding lighting. I had leftover LED strips from my layout lighting that have resistors built in to each 3 LED section so I used the colder light temp to represent modern industrial lights. I don’t have tons of spare wire laying around so used what I had, which was kind of large. Later I found some Ethernet cable which I dismantled and used finer wire for the feeds. Not an issue since from normal viewing angles the wiring is mostly invisible.

The whole assembly is located and held in place with small magnets under a styrene base plate and on top of the fuel rack base.  power is delivered via phosphor bronze contact strips. That way it’s easily removable without wires in the way. Plus being one of the few structures located at the front of the layout, durability is key (my young kids help operate).

Its patched into a Woodland Scenics Light Hub with Wago lever lock connectors below layout.

Just realized the roof would not be great with diesel exhaust pouring up into it but oh well. Fun build so far!

Pics to follow.

Now that's a neat take with that kit.

Fuel rack?

Engines are fueled from the ground, tank cars and trucks are loaded/unloaded from an elevated platform.  The kits is for a rack to load or unload tank cars or trucks.

If the platform was lowered to the level of the walkway on a diesel engine, you would have an inspection/maintenance platform.  If you wanted to keep it a fueling platform, consider adding lights under the platform, that's where the guys fueling the engines will be working.

Hey Dave thanks - appreciate the prototype insIght. I will be placing the fueling equipment at ground level.  The high level walkway is definitely a function of bastardizing a tank loading rack into this use.  Lowering the platform wouldn’t leave room for the fueling equipment unfortunately.  Since it’s colocated with maintenance facility it provides loco roof access for repairs. Taking some modelers license on this one!

interesting these kits have loco-roof level walkways and drop down access ramps also presumably for sand filling/inspection (?)   http://www.diamond-scale.com/products__diesel_service_facilities.htm   But that doesn’t make it prototypical either

I may add a sand tower if I can find room, it’s getting mighty cozy there.   Or assume the sand is pumped up to the high level platform

Fueling

Still think LED's on the lower level would be good.  Don't for get water hoses, racks for blue flags, trash cans and a rack for brooms (laborers will be sweeping out the cabs and cleaning windows while the engines are being fueled.)

Positioning of fueling station

Now I haven't been able to find any documentation support of this, but here's my two cents.

Are you sure you want to have the diesel fueling facility directly outside of the engine house? Perhaps an engine length away, but not directly outside. I would think that there are probably regulations prohibiting it on safety and health issues. The fueling may occasionally result in small amounts of spillage, which is why many facilities have pans between the tracks. In addition, diesel fuel fumes aren't exactly the most pleasant thing in the world. You want air movement to dissipate them. Probably don't want the fumes going into the engine house. Also, activities inside the engine house could cause issues with the fuel vapors.

Regarding the roof, the BNSF facility at Hauser, ID has a full roof covering.

Of course, I could be wrong...

Gary all good points and I

Gary all good points and I can only hope my OSHA fines are 1/87 scale... unfortunately that’s all the room there is here. Some spill pans and curbs are next up for this area.

There are plenty of shortlines and such

with refueling stations right at their EH. I've even seen one with the sand tower right next to the building and one leg of it going inside to sand inside the building.

When I was getting my EH planned out, I made a list of every Class II & III RR in the US and Canada and got their lat/long so I could see what they had on Google Maps. You'd be surprised what railroads did and still do.

Boom cabinets?

The Hauser Idaho facility is impressive. I may scratch build some boom cabinets since they are common on modern fuel sites. Anyone know what is the significance of the different colors on boom cabinets?  They seem to come in red yellow and blue. Maybe water vs diesel vs ???

thx

Boom Cabinets

The "boom cabinets" are probably lube oils and water.  Fuels is dispensed from the tall pipes with a "U" joint at the top.  For example in this shot of Hauser, the fuel columns are almost cut off on the extreme left and right of the photo.
