Goose in The Caboose Productions

Hey everyone, back again with another video. I don't think this turned out too bad, especially for the first time. Might turn this into a modeling basics how-too series, but we'll see. Anyways, as always thanks for watching and God Bless!

Seems like a lot of work for turnouts that are not to NMRA

standards.  So far the only turnouts that I have heard of that are to NMRA standards are either built with Fastrak jigs, built from proto-87kits, or those from Central Valley.  Why go to all of that work on a turnout that is still going to have problems.  Especially when the cost of the commercial turnout is significant to begin with?

3 Things

(1) Any trouble spots were because I didn't have the frogs energized or tortoise machines on the turnouts. The frogs will be energized here pretty soon and I'm goin gto pick up a box of terminal strips here pretty soon and install the tortoise machines.

(2) I'm a college student on a budget so I have to make do with what I have. Right now, I don't have the space, materials, or the tools for forming the frogs and everything. And with the move coming up, current purchases are going toward stuff for that factor

(3) This was an intermediate step. Next up is rebuilding some turnouts, so I'll be placing points and frogs and probably forming a few guard rails. Once we get moved and everything, I'm going to get my hands on the jigs and tools for scratchbuilding them with the fast-track jigs.

Anyways, thanks for watching the video though, I appreciate it!!!!

Check out Central Valley switch (turnout) kits.

The cost is quite a bit less than commercial r-t-r switches from the big manufacturers.  Because the Central Valley tie strips are flexible, you can also make custom switches for tight areas as well.  In addition you don't need to deal with switches that are not to NMRA standards.

Also Proto 87 shops offers a kit or used to offer a kit using the Central Valley tie strips to make what Joe called his "poor mans jig built turnouts."  I have not looked at the cost lately, but it used to be $10.00 per switch.  It is probably more now, but quite a bit less than Peco.

Been eyeing those for a while

yeah man, I've seen the advertisements over the years. I guess I just wanted to do a confidence builder so the task doesn't seem so daunting. But yes, I am definitely planning on looking those up. Anything like that's going to have to wait till after the move so I can set up a proper workstation for it. And after the move, I'm definitely planning on getting into handlaid.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions Russ and glad you watched!!
