Hi there,

I am starting to wire up my control panel.  I have 9 Atlas Snap switches that I would like to wire to toggle switches on my control panel rather than use the Atlas switch controllers.  Is there a simple way to wire in a switch position indicator light?   Any wiring diagrams would be welcome.

Thanks

Denis

There is a way... not cheap but very nice

Look up Ken Stapleton - he makes & sells flip-flop circuits to add LED indicators to the control board.

His site has a schematic for you to copy, if you know how, or he sells the unit as a kit or assembled.

YOU will need SPDT momentary contact switches to operate it and the turnout.  (And all this time I thought it needed DPDT switches)   Included in his products... you may want your own if they should match your other work.

SPDT vs DPDT

Ok I'm curious (of course you know what they say about the cat) why would you think you need a DPDT switch for atlas switch machines?

Pushbuttons are SPST throw switches and you need two to operate an atlas machine with one side of the two connected together, which makes them Single Pole Double Throw.

For Ken's circuit you need a SPDT toggle, but not momentary as if the toggle was momentary the LED would not stay on.

And if you are into building your own, check out Rob Paisley's web site at: http://www.circuitous.ca/ToggleCoilCommonCap.html, be sure to scroll down to the twin coil machines section, he uses a DPDT toggle with one side of the toggle connected to the LEDs and the other to the coils.

You need momentary contact toggle switches...

I use push buttons with momentary contacts. They do make mini toggle switches to do this. SPDT Center Off Momentary Toggle Switch is what you would need. LED-switch makes them, I'm sure Mouser and allelectronics.com make it

@Jim ... You don't.

My FIRST selection of switches was DPDT-MC  with half used to operate the switches and the other half reserved for a flip-flop circuit (like Mr Stapleton's).  I hadn't seen his, but knew how I'd expect it to work.

Then I noticed his switching is actually part of the actuation... thus, You Don't.    But as I envisioned it, you might.

@Neal... for Ken's circuit, you Don't need momentaries... as his circuit is a capacitive discharge... once tripped, Pow, and it needs a current feed to recharge.  (albeit, a low current would suffice).

He can do it without that unit Ken posted...

You can use LED's off the toggle switches (as I do), and I used an Atlas Relay in conjunction with the snap switch. The relay has connections for lights (LED or bulbs) and it's quite simple. Not sure how much Ken's cost.

David, I'll try to post a pic or diagram. If it doesn't come up within the next day, please message me and I will do the same..

Ahh - now I see

@Peter, I see why you were using the DPDT one side for throwing the switch machine the other for setting the indicator, or at least that was the plan, until you found Ken's module

@Neal as Peter pointed out it depends on what you are connecting the toggle too, yes if you connected directly to the atlas twin coil you would need the momentary.

Atlas Snap Relay

Atlas part no. 200.  @ $16 on shop.atlasrr.com

On eBay, more than one vendor, prices for new between $7 and $10.

Wire its relay terminals in parallel with terminals of a Snap Switch.

What kind of indicator light will you use?  12V lamp? single color LED? Bicolor LED?

How lamp is wired to the SPDT terminals of the relay depends on what light is used.

I've ordered up Ken's flip

I've ordered up Ken's flip flop dohickies, should do the trick.
