As previously posted, I am modeling John Allen's Gorre & Daphetid.  I will not try to reproduce every blade of grass or even every structure.  But I think that it is important to duplicate the two viaducts as close as possible.  I have many pictures, but I'm not that good at estimating dimensions.  Here is a good picture.  I was first going to measure the track width, but realized that it is at an angle, so that would not work.  Then I took a small freight car and measured from the ground to the top and it got about two inches.  Comparing his boxcar to the wall, it seems as if the wall may be about three inches high, which would match his layout plans.

Plus, how did he make them?  I have seen a few good videos by others using pink/blue foam showing how easy it is to carve bricks on them.  I don't think that kind of foam was around then, and these look too solid for that anyway.  Plaster?  Wood?

If I had my druthers, I would really like a detailed drawing of the viaducts.  I want that part of the layout to be most authentic.

GD stone viaduc

It was mentionned years and years ago in MR, John used engraved linoleum cut in form to make some of his stone viaduc.

He also used little piece of wood glued on a support, to simulate heavy stone texture.

Never see any mention about the materials used on this small viaduct and which materials he used to scratch it.

Many stone retaining wall on the GD were hand carved by John directly in the plaster.

But on the first GD, the initial one you are working on, John don't use plaster but a mixture of latex paint and starch; this is related in the book of Leen Westcot published by Kalmbach years ago.

I'd use the Bobber for size

Caboose length, Coupler to coupler is about equal to one stone segment (Arch plus 1 pier)... and the vertical stone dimension is about 12 inches... compared to 33 inch wheel on caboose.

Now, to find a bobber drawing.

One arch at a time

Consider casting a plaster arch and carve it to match. Then make a rubber mold of the master and re-cast as many segments as you might want or need.

Casting

I was hoping for a Bachmann or Life-Like brand of "John Allen's Gorre Stone Arch Viaduct" easy to assemble plastic model, no glue required.  I've seen foam and rubber castings of stone walls, but they are just for making a solid wall, not an elaborate viaduct.  It seems as if it must be made in many parts.  There is the basic wall, then the raised stones around the arches, then the raised small stones framing the smaller recessed bricks on the top portion.  Then there is the whole multi level area that holds up the bridge.  I found a web site in which someone made the viaduct in Z scale.  This may be the starting point for me.  But I have limited abilities and means to do castings.  In other words, I don't have a clue.

Here is another picture of John's viaduct, that looks more like what Marc said about being carved in linoleum.

I've always wondered about his "Stairway to Nowhere" on the left side.
