A final update from the Grimes Line.

Two and a half months after our issues began, we again have a fully functional basement. What was intended to be just a sewer line replacement turned into a complete makeover, including wall stabilization, waterproofing, and crawl space cleanup. The result is a much cleaner, drier, and safer space than we had before and will serve us well, regardless of what we decide to do moving forward.

We still have several months to a year of cosmetic work in the basement before it will be in a position to start another railroad. That, plus the fact that I want to make sure I choose something to model that’s worth my time and not just a knee-jerk reaction, means it’ll be a while until trains are again running. My hope is to be able to share with you my plans before the end of the year, but no promises.

Despite everything I was able to save the Hickman Road segment from the layout, which I always felt was the signature scene of both the prototype and my model. I’m hoping I can work up a small display area of the section as a reminder of the Grimes Line that was… and always will be.

What about a couple of TOMA

What about a couple of TOMA moduals on either side of the section? Wouldn't take up a lot of space and could be moved around as work on basement continues.

Oh the possibilities....

Dear James, Have to admit my first thought was: - Add proscenium/integrated lighting/"picture frame" fascia - Clip on a single-track "staging plank" at either end (bonus points for sectorplate or traverser) - Add a TVD "train shuttle" for hands-off continuous DCC motion - And a Dreamplayer or similar + Logitech LS21 speaker rig for "on demand" support ambience (team with a PIR detector so it automatically only plays when someone is in proximity) And you have an engaging display which could work equally well as a Train Show layout, and/or as a piece of "3D moving art" for home display... If we can learn anything from modellers such as the NG "Red Stag" team, such presentations of top quality modelling are always well-received... Best of luck with the basement build and "what trains come next"! Happy Modelling, Aim to Improve, Prof Klyzlr

Static Display

Thanks Prof.

The thought was to have it be more of a diorama instead of a functioning layout. I feel I've done the Grimes Line to the best of my ability and any retread would pale in comparison to what I've already done.

IAIS

James,

Will you continue to model the IAIS or do you have your sights on something else? Also, are you going to stick to the same timeframe or move forward or back?

The Modern Era

I'm firmly set in the modern era, so any timeframe change will be minor. Say 3 to 5 years in either direction.

As for locale and prototype... that's still up in the air.

Best of luck moving forward,
