Hello, All

This is my first post on this forum. Yay!  I do have a few questions concerning the Union Pacific Dash 8-40c Locomotives.

- Are there any UP Dash 8-40c still in service on the UP?

- Were their any UP Dash 8-40c locomotives painted with the flag scheme?

- How long were they?

I am trying to transform an old Dash 8-40c model into a nice looking one but need those questions answered before I can proceed.

Anyone who knows anything about these locomotives particularly the UP versions, please share them with me I need every bit of info I can get.

Thanks for helping,

-Ameen

Coal

The original service these engines were used in was coal and grain (the "bulk network").

They were also used in manifest and intermodal service matched with SD60'sand C44-9's in sets of 3.  When used outside of the bulk network they were primarily assigned to "east-west" service, Chicago to LA, the Bay area or the Pacific NW.

As the AC's bumped them from coal and grain, they were re-assigned to Manifest, with the SD60's, C44-9's and SD70's going to intermodal.

no flags

I think the flag scheme was reserved for comfort cab (wide nose) engines like the D8-40CW and later models. Asearch of on-line photo sites like Fallen Flags and rrpicturearchives.net might turn up an exception. As for length, D8-40Cs were 70'8" over the pulling faces of the couplers (the commonly quoted number which isn't generally useful to us modelers because our couplers aren't the right length) and 66'10" over the pilot faces (a more useful number to modelers). I think UP is in the process of disposing of the standard cab GEs. Some may be still in storage. Scott Chatfield

These units were never

These units were never painted in the flag scheme. AS noted none of them are active on the system anymore, they are all in storage or sold.

Some of these units started life as C&NW as well.

Nomenclature

On the UP they were considered C40-8, not D8-40C.

9299 was retired in september

9299 was retired in september of last year and sold to GE. Not sure if it's ended up on another road yet.

Also worht noting that she was repainted in 2014 and barely turned a revenue mile before being put back in the dead line. Not sure she ever left Ca. She was, as far as I can tell, the only spartan cab to get the flags.

Also, from that link, I was wrong, there are still a few on the roster or were as of last fall.

The Building America Scheme

The Building America Scheme started in 2002. most (all?) units built since that time use it. The wide nosed fleet that got repainted after 2002 may or may not have gotten them.

In general, the following units will have the Building America Scheme.

1: GE ES44AC (UP calls this a C45ACCTE)

2: GE ET44AC (Tier 4)

3: EMD SD70M T1 (flared Radiator SD70Ms

4: EMD SD70ACe

5 EMD SD70ACe-T4

In addition, older AC4400CW (C44AC/C44ACCTE depending on software) may have gotten repainted into Building America.

Units built or repainted after 2000 may have the nose wings, but not the flags.

This includes the Tier 0 SD70Ms

How do you find out?

In service up to a couple years ago

I used to see these occasionally a few years ago. BNSF and UP used to take turns handling the transfer job between BN North Yard and UP Davidson Yard in Fort Worth. Often a particular set of power was used to move the drag back and forth, at least on our end.

There were a couple scenarios that would cause us to leave our power at the UP yard and take something else back with us (typically the next day they'd have our power ready for us to pick up and continue using on the drag). First, if they couldn't handle us in a timely manner from the arrival yard to the departure yard, we'd tie the power down and limo to the bowl tower. Second, if we were running short on time, they were ahead on their build schedule or some combination of the two, we would find power already on our outbound drag. Finally, if we had to hostle power to pick up or drop off locomotives, this usually meant we'd tie the entire consist down at the tower and either let the hostlers handle it or get on another set that was ready to go.

In the course of paying back power hours, UP would typically provide us with junk, like the standard cab C40-8s, whereas we would gladly send good power like Dash 9s or EVOs over to them. This could really complicate things since the train back to North Yard was often heavier than the train to Davidson.

As I recall none of the C40-8s we used had the flag scheme. In fact, none of them were much to look at inside or out. When they worked they were pretty decent power.

Try this site

Use this site address to help you find UP locos that might be still in service. Use the other sites given by fellow members to help you out. I use the site for: CSX, NS, & others for their fleet of cars. Think Trians magazine has a issue they did on locos of all Class 1 railroads & the short lines.
