After attending the Amhearst Hobby Show and finding a few good deals (this is one of them) on sound decoders, I will install one in a Bachmann GP30 that was originally DCC only.  This is a straightforward install and although it is somewhat step by step, I see it as an overview on how I do it.  This enging was one of those purchases I made when I was just getting into DCC.  The engine always runs very well but I knew that a quality decoder would make a difference.   Just getting around to it now and I hope to show how I do it!

Headlights

Trying my hand at installing 0402 LEDs inside the headlight and reverse light housings.  While the glue is drying, I will fabricate lenses from fiber optic strands salvaged from an old Christmas tree.

I will say that with good light and sufficient magnification, soldering these tiny LEDs was not all that hard.  For these I am using 36AWG magnet wire.  Hardest part is stripping the insulation from the wire.  I'll post a few photos on my next update.

hot solder to strip magnet wire

Just melt some solder onto your soldering iron and dip the end of the magnet wire in it. Usually burns the lacquer right off. Scott Chatfield
