Even though my model railroad is principally a Santa Fe layout, the main passenger station represents Kansas City Union Station where a lot of different railroads traveled to/from/and through to a lot of different destinations. As such, I have tried to model a representative amount of different railroads converging at Union Station for passenger and freight interchange and arrival/departure to/from a lot of off-line destinations (ATSF, UP, MoPac, Wabash, Burlington Route, & the Milwaukee Road).

I was recently able to add a new passenger train to run on the layout. It is the N-Scale version of the Union Pacific M-10000 that was made a few years ago by Con-Cor.   Since this is a DCC layout, it was ideal that the model had been designed with an 8-pin plug-in for ease of adding DCC. I had considered installing a sound decoder (since the model has provisions for adding one) but since this will be a train that runs just from staging up to Union Station and returning to staging, I decided that the added expense was not justified.  So a Digitrax DN146IP decoder was installed in the middle car where the manufacturer placed the DCC interface. It should be noted that I found Spookshow's website (http://www.spookshow.net/loco/ccm10000.html) to be very helpful with not only his review of the M-10000, but he also had a very good detailed description of how to disassemble the middle car and install the decoder.

The video above shows the first test run on the layout. The new train will represent the UP "City of Salina" that ran from Kansas City Union Station to Salina, KS and back. The operations schedule/sequence of appearance of trains that is used on this layout has been adjusted to incorporate the new train and is also shown.
