I visited a friend of mine who´s got his entire rolling stock weathered using a very simple and low cost routine. I kind of figure that it´s a really good routine to get started on weathering.

This gets you passed the problem that you need to be really good for start in order not to ruin your rolling stock and thereby the sales value later. This method is easy, low cost and reversible and gives a decent result too.
