The Deadwood Gulch and Ruby Basin layout is a prototype of the Narrow Gauge rail roads of the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was inspired by these photos and illustrations. In the 1880's there were 3 different Narrow Gauge rail roads. I have all 3 lines on this layout, The Black Hills & Fort Pierre, Deadwood Central and the Fremont Elkhorn & Missouri Valley. All most all of the scenery and buildings are scratch built. The section in the earlier photos is the lower left corner of the layout diagram. llsRRMap.jpg Nevada5.jpg ubyBasin.jpg ry1_0001.jpg ailLarge.jpg Terry1.jpg

Excellent work!

I'm jealous!

I have been planning on building part of this area for years, but I never had quite the right space for it. I was able to visit the library at Black Hills State University in Spearfish SD and make copies of many of their photos and maps, but the ones that you have posted here are new to me. It must have been interesting living in Terry SD in those days with the ore trains running through town.

Keep up the good work!

Track Plan

Jack, on your track plan, what is the difference between the purple line and the red line?

Track Plan

The Red line indicates the track for the Black Hills & Fort Pierre and Deadwood Central railroads and the blue line is the Fremont Elkhorn & Missouri Valley railroad

Inspiration +

From the pictures you provided...you have more than enough inspiration for a great railroad ! And it looks like you have enough room to pull it all off. Out of curiosity...what is the size of your layout ? Look forward to following your progress !
