In both Internet Explorer on a PC and in Safari on a Mac I keep getting these notices about an invalid certificate for TrainmastersTV web site when I try to go there directly from a completely different website. I do not have this problem when going to TMTV from the goodies menu on the magazine webpage. The IE notice this morning said that the certificate indicated a different address or other problems. Latest attempt showed this message on a PC running Windows 7:

"This page can’t be displayed

Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to https://www.trainmasterstv.com again. If this error persists, it is possible that this site uses an unsupported protocol or cipher suite such as RC4 (link for the details), which is not considered secure. Please contact your site administrator."

What does this mean?

That's the wrong URL

That's the wrong URL: https://www.trainmasterstv.com The correct URL is https://trainmasters.tv http://www.trainmasterstv.com is an alias URL we also own, but we tell the browser to do a 301 reroute (permanent redirect) to trainmasters.tv ... These days with phishing URL tricksters, it seems modern browsers don't honor alias URL redirects like they should, in order to protect you (somewhat). That means if you ever do get the URL wrong and a site like us has aliases on URL mispellings, the browser may not get you where you should go. Make sure you type in the proper URL and it will work fine.

tested, on win7, firefox...

http://www.trainmasters.tv/  -- NO GO, redirects to HTTPS, ( https://www.trainmasters.tv/index.php ) with error "the certificate is only valid for trainmasters.tv"  (this redirect works fine on win 7, chrome)

http://www.trainmasterstv.com -- NO GO, Error 502, Bad Gateway

https://trainmasters.tv/ -- AOK.

Nice info Bill...

I decided to try your tests on my Win 10, Chrome (not sure of the rev no., I keep up to date.)

http://www.trainmasters.tv/  Works - it redirects to https://trainmasters.tv

http://www.trainmasterstv.com -- NO GO, Error 502, Bad Gateway  - same result

https://trainmasters.tv/ works as it is the true URL

Success-bad auto address

I think the problem is that IE was completing the address automatically to one of the bad addresses. It is like auto-correct in MS Word -- auto-correct comes up sometimes with imaginative "corrections". There must be a space alien somewhere in that MS software!    This is all fixed now. Thanks Joe and Bill for your help.

That's cuz our certificate is not for http://www.

That error is because our security certificate is not for http://www.trainmasters.tv, it's for trainmasters.tv ... http://www.trainmasters.tv is supposed to autoforward to trainmasters.tv ... if it does not, then manually change it.

Yeah, that works.

Thanks.

I thought www had to be on everything. Obviously I was wrong.

Simple solution - don't use

Simple solution - don't use Internet Explorer.  For security you shouldn't be going near that or MS Edge. They are both considered insecure browsers.  Use ideally either Chrome or Firefox.  I even use Chrome on my Mac as I don't like Safari.

Mark P. - www is not really used much anymore - most sites can work without it. eg scaletrains.com is just that, not http://www.scaletrains.com (sounds better for their marketing anyway).

Its not the browser its the certificate

The problem is with the Subject name on the certificate not matching the page visited.  A Subject Alternative Name (SAN) certificate would fix the issue.  The SAN Certificate would allow both domain names to be present on the certificate.  Firefox does throw the same error as IE so its not a browser issue.

Everything's always so simple ... NOT

Everything's always "so simple" isn't it? A SAN certificate that allows subdomains too is only six times the cost.

We'll have you get rid of the www in the URL by hand and we can keep the 5x and use it to fund a few more special video projects ... and remember, TMTV pays its guests and will help defer expenses getting there, too.

My host's SSL certificates

My host's SSL certificates cover both http://www. and without www as default - surely yours should do that as well?  Perhaps check with the provider to see if they can add both (hopefully at no extra cost)

I use Chrome at home - I

I use Chrome at home - I really dislike IE. But at work the default is IE (the company has a tremendously large intranet nearly all designed specifically for IE, so I generally have to use that.

Free SSL

Joe,

You could cover the www with a free certificate from Let's Encrypt.

Forced http://www.trainmasters.tv -> trainmasters.tv

We just changed our site hosting to FORCE trainmasters.tv if you enter http://www.trainmasters.tv ... So at this point we believe we have this problem solved.

Not so fast gentlemen!

I haven't been able to log into trainmasters.tv for a few weeks now, still can't. I figured it was just our internet provider, the second largest in Canada, but no.

Any other address I type in, or a bookmark that I have, it goes there immediately.

And I have been to trainmasters.tv in the past, a lot.

But after following all the info in this discussion, I still can't get to trainmasters.tv!

Can’t connect securely to this page

This might be because the site uses outdated or unsafe TLS security settings. If this keeps happening, try contacting the website’s owner.

And it doesn't work wit any browser!

What else should I be checking?

What kind of device and browser?

Quote:

I haven't been able to log into trainmasters.tv for a few weeks now, still can't.

What kind of device and browser is this? What is the exact error message? Describe HOW you try to log in and what it does exactly (e.g. I click the SIGN UP

Also try the alternative login link under the MORE INFO menu. It is a non-popup login ... we have found some popup blockers prevent the popup login box from working properly.

If the alternative login link does not work either, then try these troubleshooting steps:

1. Try different browsers. Any change?

2. Power cycle your device. Try again. Any change?

3. Try a different device (try both a PC and a smartphone for example). Any change?

4. Try a smartphone or tablet using the 4G internet connection instead of your local wifi. Any change?

The idea with the troubleshooting steps is to change the mix until you find something that works. One of the things in this list should work and if they don't then your account on the TMTV site has been corrupted. It's rare, but it has happened before.

Hmmm,

1. It would not connect, to the log in page, with any browser. And that is just typed in, "trainmasters.tv" not using any links or clicks or website, other than google search. (i pasted the results of the last time out screen in original post.) The error messages varied from browser to browser, but basically they were indicating that no reply from server, for various reasons!

2. my PC, running fully updated win10, is restarted at least 2-3 times a week.

3. on my Android cell phone, it asks me to sign up! Could my subscription have expired?!!

4. same as 3 above

OK,  I just logged into my account on the wifes MAC, no issues, I just logged into my account on my cell phone, no issues, but this is the error message when I tried typing in from my PC . . .

This page isn’t working

trainmasters.tv didn’t send any data.

Okay, try these steps

Okay, given that you've narrowed the problem down to your Windows 10 PC, that means your PC internet connection settings are corrupted for some sites, which in this case includes TrainMasters TV. In googling this problem, it appears enough people have had this problem that someone has actually made a video on how to slap Windows 10 up side the head with a 2x4 and do a total internet connection reset. This video involves going through the command prompt window and doing a total reset of your internet settings to restore things back to a fresh condition again.
