Excluding brass?

The Alco T-6 has not been produced in plastic. The prototype had a low production run, but if you model the N&W in the 70s as I do it's a necessity.

There are...

...Hundreds!

You need to narrow the focus a bit. Do you mean just diesels? or Steam? or Electric?

When you say not produced do you mean in plastic, Brass, resin kits, 3D printed or all of the above?

Being a PRR modeller I could probably list at least 50 steam locos alone! Then there are the electrics like the DD2 and FF1. And they are just te PRR stuff.

Then there are lots of oddball diesels such as the Ingalls Shipbuilding 4-S.

Missing in action

Hundreds of different "significant" steam engines have not been produced in plastic.  Bachmann, et al, has had the same 4-4-0 in production for 40 years, USRA 0-6-0, Mikes and Pacifics as well as K4's, challengers and Big Boys have been made in several variations.  Outside of those, not so much.  Real railroads had thousands of 4-4-0, 4-6-0 and 2-8-0 engines with only a couple variations made.  I would like a small Baldwin camelback (P&R I4 or I5).

Plastic diesels:  TA, RS1325, NW5, Ingalls Shipbuilding, M10000, SDL39, Alco C855, E5A, UP SW10, E1A, Baldwin Baby face, Black Maria,

Electric engines : pretty much everything other than an EP5, E60c or GG1.

The SD59MX...

...Has never been mass-produced. With only approximately 25 units in service, I doubt we'll eve see a mass-manufactured version.

Erie 6 ft gauge

I don't think any Erie 6 ft gauge locomotives have been built in any scale.

Plenty...

Dear MRHers, There's plenty of locos that have never been produced... (anyone got a model source for Britton Bros "Marshall" loco?) ...thankfully that's why Kitbashing and scratchbuilding was invented... Happy Modelling, Aim to Improve, Prof Klyzlr

I would love

I would love to see a bunch of NON-USRA steam locos done, most of all the Mississippi Central ALCO 2-8-2's. All the USRA models are way to big and long to use for the MC engines.

Diesels in plastic

Quote:

Plastic diesels:  TA, RS1325, NW5, Ingalls Shipbuilding, M10000, SDL39, Alco C855, E5A, UP SW10, E1A, Baldwin Baby face, Black Maria,

To add to Dave's diesel list, some examples that I feel are pretty reasonable (i.e. not at all rare) are the M420/M420R family, GP38AC, and Paducah GP8 and 11 and SD20.

Off the top of my head....

Dear Dave, Joe,

Off the top of my head:

SW10 = P2K SW9 with 3D-print nose bulge

GP38AC = Seem to recall this was done in plastic recently, but may be confusing with Ath or Atlas offerings...
(there's enough GP38 donor fodder to have-a-go, surely? )

Paducah GP8 and GP11 = IIRC the Horst and other Paducah air-intake mods have been available in whitemetal in times past, surely a 3D-print is do-able....

EDIT :  http://www.shapeways.com/product/SYAT2ACAK/horst-air-filter-round-ho-1-87-4x?optionId=57631746

EDIT :  http://www.shapeways.com/product/2V4E9SQA8/ho-paducah-rebuild-smokestack?optionId=59787906

IIRC there have been various published articles on converting Cannon Co GP thinwall cabs to characteristic Paducah/IC cabs, but laser-cut styrene would be the obvious option...

M420 = Kaslo Shops kit?
(I keep getting conflicting info about Kaslo kits and availability....)

Well, I do not recall anyone

Well, I do not recall anyone producing a plastic SDP40F which I find very surprising.  I have heard rumblings that Athearn may be doing one.

Soo Line

Soo Line Steam, to the best of my knowledge, only three different brass models were ever produced, the 4-8-2 light mountain, (I have two of those, obviously from different builders, neither one with original tenders.) The 4-6-2 light Pacific, only one type of 5 different classes, and the 2-8-0, again only one type of 5 different classes. I have had to modify Mantua 2-8-2 models and Roundhouse  Harriman style 2-8-0 models, and a Teneshodo 4-6-2 brass model to get close to Soo prototypes. I wish it were possible for the manufacturers to mold the plastic boiler shells without steam and sand domes, so we could attach them ourselves, in the configuration that best matches our prototypes, The Bachmann 2-8-0 for example, has a good overall look of a heavy consolidation, but the dome style and spacing are wrong for any prototype, and to change them requires considerable bashing of the shell, losing details in the process.

SDP40F = FP45 donor kitbash?

Dear DMills,

I see FP45 offerings from both Lima/AHM (old) and Athearn (new) which could be suitable donors?

I have seen folks use the

I have seen folks use the Athearn FP45 as a starting point, but there are a number of differences between the FP and SDP40F.  Now, this could be a great kitbashing project!

To Joe Atkinson ...

Joe,

Your mention of the GP38AC stumped me.  I built several of these from Atlas Silver/Gold Master models several years back, and didn't recall any visible difference on the outside.  A quick check from the web (www.american-rails.com) confirms:

"As for the GP38AC variant, it was essentially identical to the GP38 save for its model AR10 alternator in replace of the GM-built D32 generator allowing for increased tractive effort. The locomotive was built between February, 1970 and December, 1971 with 261 examples built..."

Please reply back if you know of any outward differences that would need to be changed.

Athearn SDP40F

I was at the WGH show in Atlanta this past weekend.  Kato had their N scale version of the SDP40F on display.  I asked about the possibility of HO scale.  The person manning the both said no, pointed to the Athearn booth and said they beat them to it.  Athearn's Facebook page show tooling coming along.

a surprising one is....

The Baldwin Westinghouse freight motors have never been made as a ready to run plastic loco.

They were used by electric lines into this century, and this one was built in 1915

am I the only N Scale Pacific Electric Freight modeler in the world?

I've actually built several GP38ACs, a GP10, and an M420R.  I'm just hoping not to have to do any more.   I must admit, the GP38ACs were a snap, and low on my wish list as a result.  The others...not so much.

I don't know if this is true of all GP38ACs, but the IAIS's ex-GM&O variants had two significant changes from standard GP38s:

  1. Ribbed (Dash-2 style) blower housing
  2. Last three handrail stanchions on the conductor's side are more widely-spaced

Steeplecabs

There have been many different steeplecabs, most of which aren't available in HO, now or ever.  I hope to scratchbuild Atlantic Shore Lines # 100 at some point.

C'mon now, a Cannon and Co blower

and 90-seconds work on the handrails with nippers, a pinvice, and some Loktite 770 Polyolefin primer+ACC ...

...OK, maybe a bit more than that if one factors true brass replacement staunchions,
but didn't TrainMasters.TV cover exactly this kind of "handrail-replacement" thing recently?
