Hello fellow model railroaders

As a few of you know I had been working on a YouTube video about making a railroad crossing scene… The good news is I finally finished it and you can watch it using the link below.

The video is a tutorial style video that shows how the scene was built every step of the way. There are just a couple of things I did on the diorama that weren’t shown in the video. I unintentionally forgot to press the record button on the camera! But I’ll mention them here.

There are a couple of areas that you may see in the photos where there is a subtle splash of color like purple, red and yellow, these are intentional spots to indicate flowers and weeds. You can see some purple in the photos below.

The trick is to use the color very sparingly, it only needs hint of color and the viewers imagination will do the rest.

Another tip not mentioned relates to photography, often the most realistic looking models are those photographed in natural sunlight. The color hue is familiar to our eyes due to the fact we see it every day and the shadows are consistent which makes quite a difference.

So if you have the opportunity and you want great looking photos, try photographing your models in natural sunlight.

I hope you enjoy watching the video and feel free to ask any questions or provide your own tips and advise for myself and others to continue to learn and improve.

Cheers
Luke
