One of the best things about modeling - especially prototype modeling, IMO - is the ability to create your own little time machine. I wasn't born until 1969, but on my layout it's the late 1940s. And with some (actually, a lot) of help from my friends, it's easy to imagine what it must've been like to be trackside back "in the good ol' days..." So, if you fancy a trip back in time, check out my latest blog post - it's the Autumn of 1948 and the New Haven RR is showing off the latest passenger equipment that's been assigned to its famous Shoreline . . .

Nice!

The lighted tower control board must add neat atmosphere if you do night operations!

Great Blog

Great blog, Chris, very well put together. Like the layout! I agree about the time machine concept, I also model an era before my time 1954, and growing up in the 70's nothing much was left on railroads to get excited about so it's back to the 50's

Back, back and back some more

My sketched plans are back to times long gone as well--the late 1920's, with traction and 2 footers, steam and a newfangled diesel--though one of my planned special loads is a shuttle from the space-ship lurking on a farm in the far north of Maine--or perhaps a stock car reinforced to contain the Bayakee...

Very awesome layout! I don't

Very awesome layout! I don't know much about new haven, did steam still exist in the time your modeling?

Steam era on the New Haven

Yes it did - on the New Haven generally until April, 1952. I model 1947-1949, depending on what engines I want to run. In my specific area of the New Haven, it was all steam in 1947, a mix of steam/diesel in 1948, and all diesel in 1949. Heh - the so-called "transition era" on my layout is one year(!).

If you'd like more info about the steam in the area, be sure to check out my website where I posted my research at http://www.thevalleylocal.net/. If you look on the left side of the site you'll see an article titled "The End of Steam in the CT Valley"

Thanks very much for the compliment on my layout - I hope you'll enjoy exploring the website!

Best,

Chris
