I know most of you guys who model steam know your wheel arrangements, and I'm sure there are some who don't. Steam locomotives use the Whyte Classification System. The Whyte system isn't all that complicated, and is really extremely simple to learn. I'm not going to try and list every single arrangement, as some didn't have a very long life span. I'll start with the smaller The first number in the Whyte system denotes the number of leading wheels (o).

The third number denotes the number of wheels on the trailing end of the locomotive, (used to support the firebox)(o).

One just has to count the wheels on one side, and multiply by two to get the correct wheel arrangement.
