Michael Graff Graffen

Hi!
This is my new project.
The Model Masterpieces D&RG 60' Gallows turntable in HOn3.

I will also build the Como Roundhouse to complete the scene.
The drive for the turntable will be a step motor with full indexing. It is a system developed by a friend of mine and very fool proof!
[]

I bought this kit second hand, and it misses the spider gear housing...
I will try to make a new by 3D printing it.

This is a good plan showing how I will do the drive:

(courtesy of Carrie Creek)

I started the build by staining and adding grain to the wood. The stain is Isopropyl alcohol and wiper fluid mixed with vallejo burnt umber and black.

After it dries, I will lightly sand them to remove the fuzz.
More to come soon!

Very Interesting..

Hi (Name??)

Looks like an interesting project, I'm looking forward to seeing your progress and more on that stepper motor drive.

Thanks!

I've come a little further on the way. The Nut Bolt Washer castings are mostly in place :

I just had to see how my biggest locomotive fits :

Now its time to spike some rails in place.

A little update

Just one more update before bedtime (this is after all Europe, a tad different time zone...)

Filed grooves for the cables.

Soldered the wires to the Code 70 Micro Engineering rails.

The rails spiked and glued!

I use Railway engineering rollee holders.

Never seen those rollee holders before, how well do they work?

Nice turntable.

The rollee holders work

The rollee holders work perfectly.

I prefer them over three point gauges. They are also available in brass on special order.

The base is started!

8 mm plywood base. I've glued the piedestal on the top and a piece of pine underneath. I drilled the holes for the bearings with my pillar drill to get the hole in plumb.

The axle will be replaced with a stainless tube.

The brackets that holds the tie rods are in place.

Had to see how it looks....

The pit wall is to be built using ties. And the pit rail has to be laid. I will use code 40 in the pit..

Late last night I checked the Turntable and saw that the axle wasn't lining up!?!
That despite using a drill press... probably the bushings tilted a bit when gluing them in at first?
I made a jig, removed the bushings and lined everything up.

Now it is correct!
I've also built the turntable pit wall. I used cork up to the pit ring level.
Then I glued stained ties up to the top.
The ties fit perfectly, I didn't have to trim any of them to fit!

Michael,

Your turntable is looking fantastic! I'm following along closely, as I think I have one of these kits stashed away as well.

I am enjoying things for reasons different than the ones Chris posted, I don't have one nor am I likely to ever as that is from an era I won't be doing but I find your work fascinating.

A small update:
The cork wasn't totally flat for the pit rail, so I mounted a template/scraper on my centre jig. I then spackled the surface and rotated the template to get a flat surface. It worked great!

I made some ties for the pit rail:

I glued them using my jig to get them to point towards the centre.

As you can see in the picture above, I made another template on the jig.
This one were to make the slope in the pit.
I mixed some very soupy plaster which I poured in the pit at the same time as I rotated the template.
After a minute or two, it began to set. I then removed the template (which had a roll of excess plaster on one side).
This is how it looked;

I added some thin paint to prepare for the gravel and sand:

The piedestal was painted as well.

Michael.

I have glued the real Colorado gravel in the pit:

I have installed the pit rail as well. Code 40 from Micro Engineering.

Now it's getting close!

Mostly done:

The things left to do are to install the ring on top for the tracks and the gear, motor and electric wipers.

I found a problem with my

I found a problem with my pillar drill ....
I made a jig when I was to glue the turntable bridge on to the axle to get it completely centered and straight.
I checked with the axle against the jig, and it was a 0.5° error!?!
The pillar drill I use has a tiltable platform with an indexed 0° position (like a small notch), but it seemed to be wrong anyway ....
Took my digital level with the magnetic mount and put it on a steel shaft mounted in the chuck, I then reset the reference point.
Put the level on the plate which then showed a 0.6° error!
I adjusted the plate up to 0° and test drilled again.
Absolutely perfect!
Checked with a new machine set square and a square I have used in the workshop, the machine square was okay, but the other showed a small amount of wrong, so it ended up in the circular archives ....
Guess which one I used to check the level before....
Sometimes you just trust it to be right, but the old expression; "Measure twice and cut once" is still the guiding principle that should be followed!
(With the addition to have measuring tools that are correct ...)

Got myself a step motor

Got myself a step motor today!

2400 steps per revolution.

Time for some experimenting!

More done.

I added the walkways on the turntable. I guess the shop workers wouldn't like to jump between the ties...

Here is the 2400 step per rotation motor:

It is big, but that doesn't matter when mounted underneath the table.

I will 3D print the gears for the drive. Let's see how it works.

Gearbox printed

The gearbox for my turntable is printed!

It is drawn in Solid works and the parts are printed in ABS for the gears, and PLA for the housing.
Now it is time to install it and see how it works.

Tracklaying

I have almost finished the tracklaying for the roundhouse.
Next is to build the roundhouse walls.

pit rail

Your turntable is awesome.  I'm thinking of adding one to my layout.  How did you install the pit rail?

Thanks! The pit rail was

Thanks!

The pit rail was easy. I just formed it to a circle of roughly the right diameter.

I then used a jig mounted on the TT axle. It had a small grove to fit the railhead.

I then glued the pit rail tie for tie until the circle started to close, and then trimmed the end for a perfect fit before closing the circle.

Progress on the roundhouse.

I have painted the walls on my Como roundhouse and glued them together.
This kit must be a solid 12 on a 1 to 10 difficulty scale.... there are just so many things that has to work out in the end.
So far no bigger errors (I hope...)
