I have an older Atlas SW-9 in mint condition.  It has a single can motor and runs like a watch, less than 1 smph both directions, competely silent.  What could be the problem?????  High stall AMPS over 2.5.  It would definitely smoke a Tsunami.  Josh at Tony's Trains says the QSI Revolution U can handle it..............I'm not so sure about that.

Anyway, I'm curious what others are doing to add sound to these big fukllk size O scale locomotives???

Thanks,

Peter

I don't have any clue.

I just noticed that this post has dropped to the second page of the "recent posts" forum and thought I'd give it a bump for you.

Do you have DCC decoder in it now?.

With such high amp draw  you will have to go the 2 decoder route.  One for the motor control only and the Tsunami for the sound and lights.  Just put a dummy load on the Tsu to simulate a motor current draw. Put both decoders on same adresse. This way the Tsu will respond as the motor control decoder will.

Thanks Marc, I had come to

Thanks Marc, I had come to that conclusion after I posted the question and looked around for good sound decoders that could handle 2 1/2 AMPS-none.  My next problem is what decoder to use for the motor?  I have only had experience with the Tsunamis.  Is there somewhere I can look that lists all the brands/specs?  Thanks again....................Peter

Reference info

Peter,

Here's a possible place to search for brands/specs.

http://www.gatewaynmra.org/dcc/dccdecoders.htm

They also have links to mfr's sites.

Edit:  I just noticed that those are HO references, and you're in O.  But, you can still use the links to mfrs.

That site is so dated, un touched since 2008,  that you wonder if it still has any value to it.  Soundtraxx DSD (discontinued) is the only sound decoder they mention.

`` ......  Looked around for good sound decoders that could handle 2 1/2 AMPS - none. ``

I looked around too  and found.   QSI has their line of Aristo and Magnum dual mode mode decoders with sound than can handle 2.7A and stall of 3A. So  Tony`s was right,  you just did not get the whole picture. Then there is the upcoming QSI UCS-2 for O and G scale.

Digitrax has a few O/G scale decoders. You can add their sound chip, hard wired in.

TCS, ``  the world leader in decoders `` does not do  O/G scale.

NCE has O/G scale decoders availlable.

That is about the size of it.  Did not look further.

You might send an inquiry to Railmaster Hobbies

http://www.railmasterhobbies.com/  He features S-scale in addition to various dcc systems and accessories.  I suspect that S-scale might be closer in power demands than HO or N-scales just because of the size and weight of the models.  I'm ot sure what is wrong with the link, but if you type it into your browser, it should take you to the site.

What about useing an "O"

What about useing an "O" scale DCC sound decoder?

Go to the following site where they sell "O"and G scale DCC  Sound decoders and find the unit with the following specs.   By the way I found this on Google by typing "O Scale DCC"  Google to the rescue.

5 amp output
MRC's Brilliance sound actually recorded railside by MRC's Sound Engineers
Easy installation - no modifications needed
1 1/2 inch, 4 ohm full fidelity speaker included
User programmable, multiple bells, whistles, or horns
Dual mode capability lets you run on DCC or analog DC
User programmable, fully adjustable speed curves
Directional headlights with user programmable Rule 17 lighting
Full array of lighting effects: Mars, ditch lights, strobes

O scale decoder

Thank you all for your help.  I probably forgot to add that I was looking for 16 bit Tsunami/Qsi type sound.  I was aware of the large QSI decoder but I was not aware of the MRC.  Will need to check them to see if they have the right non turbocharged engine.  I think I will likely go the 2 decoder route-hey, there's tons of room in these O scale guys!!  Thanks again..................................Peter

Since the QSI can be reprogrammed would it not make sense to go with them. MRC are not reprogrammable to my knowledge  same for the Tsunami if neither fits your sound requirements.
