Day 2 started early for me - I was down at 6:00am to finish off those last 3 Win10 upgrades. We ran into a few technical issues, such as the aforementioned PowerPoint size issue (PowerPoint Mobile also appreciates an Internet connection....). There was also one clinician that had a laptop where he had to pop the back cover and reseat the hard drive before it would boot...

But the Contest Room opened today, so I've been wandering over there every so often:

This was right after it opened... it's been filling up nicely since.

Clinicians

Rob Spangler was on hand at the convention giving a clinic about his scenery design. The room he was in had 147 seats which were all tekn and there pwer possibly another 2 dozen folks standing around. Rob did a great job - as expected!

Lance Mindheim was also on hand and playing to a packed house with his "achievable Realism" clinic!

And there were lots more. 6 rooms with 9 clinics in each room on Monday.

You really don't want to know how many photos I took today... I did make it to one clinic, Lee Nicholas' clinic on his Utah Colorado Western RR.

So, on with the photos. Narrow gauge is really in here, with Nn3, HOn3, and On3 seemingly outnumbering the standard gauge equipment.... This is an F scale Virginia & Truckee water car -

Apparently the Flying Scotman visited the US some time ago. This was her at the head of a long train of passenger cars -

There is also, in addition to the contest/evaluation categories, a non-competition showcase where modelers can just show off their work, such as this railgun -

And this trolley -

This is one of two O scale sawmills that were built from a kit (the other can be seen in the upper right). However, even though they began as the same kit, they are now distinctly different structures in many ways -

I want to say this is HO scale, but I'm not sure, and the part of the documentation I photographed doesn't say -

And here we have a 1:20.3 scale Flatulene tank car and a possible manufacturing center car, entered under the "Thumbs" category -

3416_mrh.jpg

Also in the Thumbs category is this Bathtub Gondola -

People were enjoying examining the entries -

3438_mrh.jpg

There is also an Arts and Crafts category -

3419_mrh.jpg

And of course, there are the people I see year after year, running the Celebration Room - Robert Hamm is on the left side of the photo here -

3443_mrh.jpg

And Paul Voelker, in the hat, who is in charge of the photo competition (he may have other responsibilities, but I've most frequently seen him with the photos), also in the photo is Bill Brown, MMR -

3440_mrh.jpg

Now I put on the 100mm Macro lens, and went forth to discover it's strengths and weaknesses. Many of the items I have close-up photos of here are in Nn3 scale/gauge, such as this disconnect logging truck. Someone said it had been 3D Printed -

And that's it for tonight. It's after 11pm, we're closing up shop, and will soon be off to get not quite enough sleep.

Thanks!

Jeff:  West Coast too far to travel this year, and money too steep, so I enjoy your hard work to let us see what's there this year.

Thanks again,

Too much to do!

Too much to do here in Portland, so your updates provide me with an insight to what I've missed!

Still, visited two heritage railroads and several clinics already, and enjoying every minute of it.
