UPDATED 8/16/15: The video below shows two N-Scale Kato PA1 units with sound decoders along with a PB1 unit being tested in a A-B-A consist. The sound decoder, Digitrax SDN144K0a, is the same decoder that was previously installed in the Kato E8A (April 2015) and two F7A units (July 2015).  The PB has a non-sound decoder.

All 5 engines have a modified Aztec frame and a 16mm speaker.  This is a picture of what the frame looks like before re-installing everything. The main difference between the E8 and the PA modified frames was the slot for the capacitor.

Installing the decoder into the PA was the same as the install in the E8A.  In both cases, only the rear LED is clipped off, however, the PA does not require any trimming of the interior of the cab to accommodate the front LED but the E8A did.  The F7/F3 install does require a bit more work since the frame is shorter. The diesel sound files that come with the decoder are either the EMD 567 (ok for the E8 and F7/F3 or EMD F40). The sound is not correct for the Alco 244 that powered the PA but that isn't necessarily a big deal.  For now the sound is good enough.
