For as long as I've been following the IAIS, their MOW department in Atlantic has used an ex-Chessie 50' PS-1, C&O 21054, as their local tool shed.  I've always liked this car, and found it especially interesting in that the IAIS never bothered to patch it at all (much like their ex-NP boxcar/tool shed in Council Bluffs that's still in full NP paint and lettering).  I never saw the Chessie car move at all until it was de-trucked and relocated adjacent to the west yard ladder in Atlantic a few years ago.  Having just finished Atlantic's Jordan Spreader ( https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/iaiss-west-end-completed-jordan-spreader-12199461 ), I decided to move the Atlantic yard scene along a bit further and tackle this Chessie car as well.

Photos follow in a subsequent post.

Chessie comes to Iowa

First up, a photo of the prototype car from June 12, 2004:

Next, an Intermountain photo of the model that served as the starting point for this project.  I used a Microscale Chessie boxcar set to renumber the car and replace the factory Chessie heralds with a smaller version to match this prototype.

mountain.jpg Here's a pic of the side of the car that'll face the aisle to the north.  I did the fade with oils, while the rust was a mix of oils and Pan Pastels.

Prototype view of the south side of the car after it was placed on cribbing and moved adjacent to the yard, July 25, 2010:

View of the south side of the model, turned 180° for easier photography.  To match the prototype, I removed the knuckle from the coupler on the left, giving the added benefit of ensuring that operators don't accidentally move this car.  This side of the car will usually face the backdrop.

Looking  very nice. Did you use 6mm grass, for inbetween the  tracks? How did you weather the white  Rock island hopper?

Thank you Phil.  I used a mix of 4mm and 6mm Silflor Late Summer there.

That was done with oils.  Same colors I used on the spreader, but just mixed to try to match photos of the particular prototype. I use Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre, and Burnt Sienna.
