It appears that the 'mark as not spam> problem is still there.

New user StevenKing posted in the paypal thread selling short term loans. The 'mark as spam' button just toggles to 'mark as not spam' when pressed.  This problem or 'feature' has been ongoing since Joe has resurrected the unintentionally marked spam posts the other day. I understand that a moderator can remove the offending spam posts, however the regular users are unable to remove them.  It appears that the problem with this has not been resolved. We are still able to delete legitimate posts with the 'mark as spam' button, but the offenders are still unaffected by this button.

I'm going to experiment...It

I'm going to experiment...

It shows as 99 spam markings now... I'm going to mark it as not spam, see if that resets it to 0, then mark it as spam again and see what happens... will report back here.

== a minute later ==

Nope, didn't work.

It did reset to 0, and I was able to mark it again, but it went straight back to 99 spam reports, the pink background (owww... my eyes!) and didn't disappear.

The specific post is the second one ( not counting  OP ) on this page: https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/using-paypal-12185833

Been there, done that. It

Been there, done that. It will just toggle back and forth between 'mark as spam' and 'mark as not spam'. A moderator can remove it as they have in the past, but the problem hasn't been resolved. Last time I reported it, I was notified that the problem was fixed, however all they did was remove the offending post.

Here's how it works...

It appears to me that...

When you MARK it as spam, it turns RED and does not disappear.

An admin or super-user comes along and reviews the "Marked items" and removes or un-marks them as appropriate.

My guess is that Joe has promoted a few un-named users on the forum to be the spam police and given them the power to remove marked items - thus no more accidental thread removals.

It's not broken - just different from how it was.

If that is true, then it

If that is true, then it would be nice if he would tell us about the new 'system'  That way we don't have to worry about it anymore. We can just let the newly appointed moderators deal with all the spam.

To test this new concept, I'll add one more post to this thread, and then go and try to remove it with the spam button to see if if works.

It is pink, but still there.

So, when do these super users get around to removing valid spam?

You got it right Bill.

Thanks for that info. The post I marked as spam toggled to 'mark as not spam'  Mystery solved. Now we will let the moderators deal with it. Maybe I'll just forget all about the spam on the site, and just let the moderators deal with it all. Personally, I preferred the old way of doing things, but perhaps it makes it easier for Joe to deal with the issue of people accidentally removing posts. I think a confirmation to remove would be more elegant but maybe this was the best/easiest way to to do this. I hope that the workload doesn't get too much for the moderators to keep on top of. Time will tell.

I told you ...

I told you if we started trying to mess with the spam module to add the confirmation we might break something and we did. So we've stopped doing our testing for now and put the unmodified spam module back. It was us experimenting to try and add a confirmation that broke it so it no longer unpublished spam correctly. Two steps forward one back ... That's what we get for messing with the code, but at least we learned something in the process. Now to study the problem and see if we can find an alternative for adding the confirmation.

Thank you for that Joe.

Here I thought my eyes were starting to play games with me, and my sanity.

After all, it is kinda fun nuking the spammers.  Quite honestly, It didn't seem like much of a problem before as people who lost a posting just had to mention it and it would get restored fairly quickly.  Sometimes people accidentally removed a post, but they usually notify you and it would get fixed. I think overall you will spend less time dealing with the spam going back to the old way. That will leave you with more time to spend on getting the mag out, as well as some well deserved layout time on you own layout...

Cheers,

Randy

The problem is....

You don't know you lost a post until you go looking for it

That's true Bill, but I guess

That's true Bill, but I guess checking the spam folder from time to time should catch those 'oops' deletions. (In theory anyway)

Now Happy,   Randy

First Friday of every month

First Friday of every month we have a task on our calendar to check and unspam the one or two legit threads that may have been accidentally spammed that month. And we're still looking into how to add a confirm to the HTML down in the spam module code using the Drupal 6 API calls ... We'll eventually figure it out, I'm sure.
