I recently constructed a mountain on my layout. I overlaid the framework with Woodland Scenics plaster cloth followed by Sculptamold after it had cured. I am pleases with the appearance of it, but my question is; was Sculptamold a good material to use? I have read both positive and negative comments about the use of it on the Internet. I would like to hear the comments of others who may have used it.

No problems here!

I'll try not to give anything away since the subject is in an article I've submitted for the magazine. But I used it on a project modeling desert scenery, than shipped the project 7000 miles from a high desert environment to the east coast of the US. While at show the project fell over executing what was a 3ft dead drop onto a concrete floor and the Sculptamold suffered NO DAMAGE. I'm sold on the product.

I like it, user friendly and not too messy to work with. I've torn up layouts with it on there and it's in still sound after many years so I'm satisfied with it's longevity....DaveB

Thanks for the encouragement

Thank for the encouragement. I really like how easy it is to work with and the appearance it gives. After it dries I am planning to stain with Woodland Scenics earth tone colors.

Staining / painting Sculptamold

It is possible to mix stain / paint in with the Sculptamold to color it so that you don't get white dust if your drilling through it to plant trees.

Sculptamold

I use it in my ground goop, one part sculptamold, one part paint, one part white glue, and one part vermiculite.

That way it is always the color of the paint I chose when I drill holes or plant trees.

It works very well.

I like it for small jobs

Where I don't want the mess associated with plaster.  For covering large areas, plaster cloth followed by a second coat of good old plaster of paris retarded with lemon juice or white vinegar is still my method of choice. Sculptamold is  a bit costly for any large expanses of scenery. One thing I really like about it though is that you can literally mix small quantities in your hand!  You can pick up a handful and sprinkle water on it and knead it in your fist to mix it. Keep sprinkling in water till you get the consistency that you want. Really great that way for quick jobs.
