Anyone have experience with Micro-Marks HO can motors? I have a hand full of locomotives that would be nice to repower and MM has them on sale for 20 bucks each currently. Much more affordable then the Proto Power West motors.

Chris.

Micro Mark motors

Those are 5 pole skew wound motors. They run smooth because of the 5 poles and the skewed winding. Any motor with these kind of specs are good. Also I think you'll find these motors are made overseas to the west of us, meaning China. Take a look on e-bay and you'll probably find them even cheaper. Here's a link to a few motors. Note they show 5 pole skew wound motors.

Not sure.....

I just got my Micro Mark motors, bought on the above mentioned sale .  They have a stamped logo on them that looks strangely like the Bachmann logo.  Haven't run one yet....time will tell.  Hopefully better than the ancient motors in some very old Athearn locos I have, which is what they are intended for.

Just my 1.1 cents.  (That's 2 cents, after taxes.)

Run extremely smooth!

Just installed one for a friend in an Athearn chassis and runs very smooth.  Has very good slow speed control and is fairly quiet.  I used the tradition Athearn drive line couplings but Micromark does sell their own set of drive shafts. Let us know how yours works out.

micromark motor

I REPLACED 3 BLACKMAN  G SCALE STREET CAR MOTORS THAT LASTED ONLY  8 TO 12 HRS.  WITH MICROMARK MOTORS HAVE SHOWN AT 4 TRAIN SHOWS  2 DAYS AT EACH SHOW NO PROBLEMS. HIGHLY SATISFIED . THEY RUN ABOUT 8 HRS. PER DAY ONLY LUBE BEFORE EACH SHOW.

Video or photo documentation??

Anyone have video or photo of the install process? Got an old Life-like E8 I'm working on for a friend and it looks like it's going to need a complete gut and re-motor job.

In a RPP SD40

Here's one in a SD40.  The frame is cobbled together from a couple different Athearn frames.

The motor is mounted on a brass L, à la steam engine style.  The drive shafts are 1/16 steel rod with hex nuts soldered to the end.  The other end is fitted into a hole in the normal Athearn coupling.  The NCE decoder is on another brass bracket.  It runs pretty well, there is a slight jump going from speed step 0 to 1 but not really noticeable in a consist.

3-pole or 5-pole?

I don't have the exact link at hand, but over on these discussions under "Repower & Regear" I recall there being mentioned that their was another replacement can motor being sold by MicroMark that was a 3-pole can motor, rather than 5-pole motor. They made mention to avoid that one.
