OK this is my first time to blog, so bear with me. The building I have attached pictures of started out as a Walthers Golden Valley Canning Co. kit. After I built it I completely repainted and weathered it and mounted it on apiece of .060 styrene to keep it all together. I hand painted various bricks to make the building look more realistic. The roof top air conditioner and support platform were scratch built, painted and again weathered. I added additional detail items, people etc, also added scenery around the whole building.

The industry "Wm. Nast & Co." was an actual company located in Ironwood, Michigan's Upper Peninsula and was serviced by the Chicago & Northwestern RR. I was able to get a copy of the CNW's "Shippers Index" which has helped me name my structures for actual companys. I find this helps to make my operating sessions seem more realistic

First Time Blog

I am going to respond to my own blog. Ha Ha

My wife who was a educator looked at my write up and said that she should proof read them before I post them from now on.

Richard.

Beautiful job!

The cannery looks perfect - is this a waterfront place that packs Great Lakes fish?  You got the colors and details perfect, in my opinion.  Nice!

Hi Rog,

No actually it is a Canned Fruits and Vegetable packing that was located in Ironwood, MI. Thanks for the compliment.

A picture is worth 1000 words...

Welcome Richard,

Don't sweat the small stuff.  The write up gets the message across and the good photos of a very nicely done structure, tell the rest of the story.  No editing needed! [smile]

Richard do not worry about grammar and spelling no one is worst than I am so that covered, Kevin hit it PICTURE WORTH 10000 words. A friend of mine has taught me how to do Walthers kits but not as good as yours. Take a min and watch this vedio and then part two may give you a bunch of new ideas.

Great structure

Thanks for posting the photos. That is a great job. I like the idea of mounting it on a piece of styrene. I am thinking I my do that with some of my soon to be built kits.

A+

You have done a great job.

My question....it looks like there are two docks, is one for rail and the other for ground transport?

I'm looking forward to seeing it in your layout.  Can you provide any detail/pics on your layout?

A Nice Looking Complex

I'm planning to use a cannery on my (under construction) layout also.  It won't be too far removed from what you've done here.

A small suggestion:  I presume the rooftop air conditioner is a condensing unit.  You might want to add a couple refrigerant lines (pipes) going from the unit down through the roof, plus an electrical conduit (another pipe) to feed juice to the unit.  Also, some access to the unit for maintenance would be a nice touch.  I noticed you provided that for the water tank . . . maybe something similar would work for the a/c unit.

A very nice model...

Well done

I'd just suggest adding a few supports for the large steam lines between the main building and boiler house at 8 or 10 scale foot intervals. Along the lines of lightweight trestle bents.

To Leroy, Yes there are two docks, one is for rail and the shorter one is for trucks.

To rest of you who have responded, thanks for the good comments and for the suggestions. I intend to put them to good use and have it judged for AP points Probably it will qualify as kit-bashed. This building has been on my layout for quite awhile, but not fully detailed. The Sunday after Thanksgiving our local Div 6 of the NCR has an annual demonstration type train show open to the public. Along with demos we also have a model compitition and the public to votes on their favorites. I added the extra detailing and took it. I ended up taking 2 nd place in the structure group. I am starting to work on my AP Award for "Master Builder Structures" so I took this one along to get input from two MMR's in our Div. as well as another structure which I wanted them to judge, and this worked out well got 92 points out of the max of 125. I will put the other building up ASAP.

Sorry a little long winded.
