I, for one, am happy that.........

.......the January issue of "Running Extra" actually comes out in January!  I never could understand the logic used by "Model Railroader" and other magazines having issue dates up to 2 months in the future!

Removal date

From what I have heard, and I don't know what level of validity there is to it, the dates on newsstand magazines are the date that the issue should be removed from the newsstand.

Whether it began that way or was something like the auto manufacturer's thing about releasing "next year's models" halfway through the current year, I have no idea.

Dates

It can’t be the date the issue should be removed - The april fools stuff is in the April issue, the christmas stuff in the Dec issue, etc.

Back in the early 80’s when I was in collegeI remember eagerly waiting to pick up the next issue or MR at the local general store, they always came in about the middle of the month before the cover date.  So for example the Feb issue would come out around Jan 15th.

What I heard for the reason they kept getting further and further ahead of the cover date is advances in publishing tech shrinking the time needed to get an issue out.  Instead of moving the start date back to keep releasing near the cover date, they kept the start date the same and just shipped it when it was done.

Issues received.

And that is one of my pet peeves. Any magazine with a January date should be out on 1/1. Not back in November. MR has gotten so out of whack, it just irks me. And for Joe, I think it's a miracle that he can get it out at least the first week of the month. Especially in today's environment. And I for one fully understand his situation. Thank goodness, he's not issuing the April issue today. Or the March! As for MR and RMC and any other magazine, the February issue should be coming out next week or somewhere around the 15th. Same for renewals. MR wants my money 2 to 3 months in advance. No thanks.

New staff member?

I'd heard there is a new editor / proofreader on staff, so there may be some "learnin' the ropes" activity as well.  Bring it on when it's ready!  I've got other hobby items to spend my time on, RE will get its turn.

Delay in getting notificiation of release

I haven't received a notification of the issue release by email as I usually get when it is put out.  I have checked my account and there is nothing there either.  Is there usually a delay between when the RE issue is released and it being available in my subscription?  I checked my account and I renewed in November 2020 so I am still a subscriber.  Just checking since others have received the issue.

For Marc

Hi Marc,

Patience Grasshopper.. There is usually a delay from when you see the MRH-RE topics bob up in the forum and when the email blast goes out to the subscribers to say "come & get it"

During that time - MRH-RE is available for download from your download link (just checked my link) even though I haven't been "officially told by email" that it's available. Any typos/faulty links etc found after release are fixed in both MRH and MRH-RE, and some other stuff behind the scenes is being bedded down by Joe & his staff during this in-between period This is why you might see several "updated" markers against the main MRH and MRH-RE pages for the month. This ensures that the MRH attached to MRH-RE and MRH-RE itself are as good as it can get when the "come & get it" email goes out.

If you download it when the MRH_RE topics bob up in the forum, then you may not have the best version possible. It does pay to wait for the "come & get it" email - if you can hang out for it that long, (GRIN),

Regards,

John Garaty

Pictures missing

Joe -

Downloaded MRH-RE using the link in the email I received. The issues is missing multiple photos.

Using: Macintosh macOS High Sierra (10.13.16), downloaded using Chrome web browser (Version 87.0.4280.141 (Official Build) (x86_64)), viewed using Preview (Version 10.0 (944.5)

Photos missing in both the adaptive and wide versions:

Table of Contents: Limited Modeler, Stock cars

Limited Modeler: photo 3

Getting Real: photos 1,2,3,4,5,22,25

Stock Cars: lead photo, 1,2,4,5,6,8 (but 9 is there), 10,11,12,13,14,15,16,18,19,21,22,23 (24 is there), 25, 26-32,35,36,38 and 39.

All the photos are there for MRH itself.

MRH: That sounds like a corrupted download. Please delete your downloads, reboot your machine, and try downloading again, please!

Not seeing THAT error

Problem I had was with the web browser I normally use to download RE; it would stop the download about 70-90% of the way through and reset to 0%.  Changed browsers, all is good.

Diffusers, not disusers.  That's about the only error I've seen so far.  Nice work this month!

Looks like it is an issue

Looks like it is an issue with Preview. Re-downloaded and same issue. Opened the download with the Chrome Browser and Adobe Acrobat reader and the issue is all there.
