Running Extra is not out yet

Quote:

The June issue of Running Extra is not out yet — it will be out later today.

Running Extra is always a day after MRH. Since MRH is in the back of Running Extra, and because MRH has ads in it, MRH is the most complex to produce and test. We always release MRH first, and then give it a day to bake in, looking for feedback about errors. We the take those error reports, correct MRH, and then the NEXT DAY, release RE with the corrected MRH in the back.

That way, the RE readers always get a fully vetted and field tested version of MRH in the back.

Where is June ?

Joe I clicked on my download like normal but all I see is up to May 2020 No June. I renewed which should start in July. ---  Ken

Quote:

MRH: Ken, a bit of a long story ... our provider SendOwl is sometimes not very smart. If you don't have an autorenew subscription, when you buy another year, it creates a brand new sub with a new link, it does not add on to the end of the sub you have.

That means you need to be very careful *which* link you use to renew or you may miss an issue -- which your renewal did. You signed up last June with our special, which was not an autorenew, so that sub runs 12 issues  from June 2019 - May 2020. Then you eagerly renewed using the July signup, which means you have now missed June.

We will cancel your wrong starting issue new sub and move you to a new sub starting in June, so you don't miss an issue -- and we will email you the new sub link. Also ignore the cancellation message, that's just us cancelling your wrong starting issue sub.

Right to Left .pdf ?

For some reason my June 2020 issue will not turn pages Right to Left via .pdf.   I have to scroll pages up/down. Same with both landscape/portrait.  Did adobe change something?   I'm using the free version.

Moderator: what PDF reader are you using? With Foxit Pro, I've always had to scroll.

what do I do to "trigger" or pay for auto-renew

I think my first-year subscription has expired. What action do I need to take for my first auto renewal?

Not an auto-renew

Mark,

Your subscription has indeed expired, and was not an auto-renew subscription. To resubscribe, go to  https://forum.mrhmag.com/magazine-feedback-was-ezines-891776 and pick the correct subscription option. Your new subscription should be set up for auto-renew, and you will have a new download URL sent to you.

Win10

I'm using Win 10 with Firefox 77.0.1.

MRH: Can you post a screen grab? We would like to see what you're seeing, since we can't reproduce it here. Maybe we can figure out what's going on if we can see your screen.

Are you seeing this?

Here is a screen grab of the magazine inside Firefox.

firefox.jpg

Notice the page arrows on the far upper left. Clicking on those arrows changes pages without scrolling.

You can also click ONE TIME inside the document somewhere (make sure it's not on a link) and then the left and right arrows on your keyboard will change the pages without scrolling.

Can't rate article

For some reason, I can't rate articles from the PDF. The article webpage opens in my browser but the message is "Buy issue to read this article". Apparently, it seems that my online account is not aware that I purchased the yearly subscription...

Clearing up the confusion

First, you can rate the articles just fine. See this screen grab and note the top arrow pointing at the rating area ... works fine.

Second, the MRH website for free products only and it is dumb and knows nothing about any paywall products. Your account on here has no ties to your RE account on SendOwl. They are two different accounts

To add "smarts" that would link the two would take a lot of very expensive programming, so just ignore the buy this issue message. That message will never change, RE subscriber or not.

Trying to renew with PayPal

I'm trying to renew, and followed the link from the e-mail, then clicked on the link to renew starting with the June issue. I selected PayPal, but when I get there, my only choices are to pay from the bank account or credit card linked to the PayPal account. There's no choice to pay using my PayPal balance (which is more than adequate to cover the amount). Is this something MRH is imposing on PayPal payments?

Make sure your payment preferences are set properly

Nope. If you have entered a card and bank info, you need to make sure you have explicitly set your account to default to use your balance first at all times for online payments. See the how-to below from the Paypal website:

How do I choose or change my PayPal payment method?

If you own any PayPal balance, it’ll be your default funding source. However, you can select a debit or credit card as your preferred way to pay, and we'll use it every time when you shop online or send a payment for goods or services. Learn more about how to  link a card.

Here's how to set your preference from your computer:

  1. Go to  Settings.
  2. Click Payments.
  3. Click Change next to "Online purchases".
  4. Select your preferred card, and click Confirm.

Here's how to set your preference from your PayPal app:

  1. Tap the gear icon at the top right.
  2. Tap Payment Preferences.
  3. Tap Online purchases.
  4. Select a preferred payment method, and tap Done.

Whether you’ve set any preference or not, you can always change again how you want to pay for a transaction during checkout. Simply click Change payment method on the payment page.

I had to go into my Paypal account and follow the instructions above after entering bank account and credit card info to force it to use my Paypal balance FIRST.

After I did this, then when I try to pay for Running Extra with my Paypal, it now says explicitly it will use my balance first. See inside the red box.

The note I've marked with a red box showed up only after I explicitly told Paypal to default to using the balance first (see steps above).

I just checked, and my

I just checked, and my payment preferences are set up correctly:

pp1.png

When I choose the PayPal option from any other vendor's site, using my PayPal balance shows up as one of the options (and is the one already selected by default). When I choose PayPal from the RE renewal page, I get this:

pp2.png

SendOwl must be doing something wrong with the PayPal API.

PS. I've been using PayPal for decades, both to buy and sell, and our business even accepts PayPal payments using the PayPal API, so it's not that I don't know how to use it. When buying stuff from the US, I prefer to use my PayPal balance because it's already in US dollars, so I don't get hit by PayPal's or the credit card company's unfavourable exchange rates.

Any more ideas?

It's still not letting me use my PayPal balance, even though my PayPal account is set up correctly as you described (and as I said, this doesn't happen when I try to buy from other vendors).

SendOwl (mumble)

Dang SendOwl, we're less than thrilled with some of their "features" ... longer term, we will be looking at moving off SendOwl because of things like this. Meanwhile, let us know if you would be good with us emailing you an invoice you can securely pay with Paypal or a credit card, it should have Paypal's full payment feature set available to you, including pay from your balance. Just say the word and we will email you the manual invoice and handle it that way.

Yes, a PayPal-payable invoice would be great!

I'll PM you with the details.

I imagine it would be a royal pain to change away from SendOwl though, given that there will always be active subscriptions.

Invoice?

Hi Joe:

Sorry to contact you here. I tried sending you a couple of messages, one via your link, and one by e-mail. I wonder if you're receiving them? I'd like to resubscribe while the June issue is still available as a starting point.

Thanks,

Stefan

MRH: Okay, found the email -- the one you sent regular. The PM just went into a black hole as it does about 50% of the time thanks to spam server blacklist filtering. Anyhow, sent the invoice and copied both you and the wife since it sounds like she's the one paying for it.
