Why is this here before MRH?

MRH has links to the March RE, so this page needs to exist first or those links won't work. We can't roll out MRH if it has broken links!

Mine downloaded quickly enough

I just downloaded the March RE in a few seconds, although frankly I cheat - I'm at work with a gigabit connection to the internet.

Note: where you live may have an impact, I'm seeing reports on of a fiber cut on the east coast in the NY/NJ area, as well as issues with one of the larger Tier 1 long-haul backbones.

March RE isn't on the download page

I have received notice the March RE is available.  However, when I visit my saved bookmark and try to download it, March RE doesn't appear on the download page.  Help, please.

You do not access RUNNING EXTRA through this website. You must DOWNLOAD Running Extra to read it. When you subscribe to Running Extra, we email you your subscription download page link. Have you downloaded this issue to your device with your PDF reading app?

P.S. Keep in mind RUNNING EXTRA sits behind a paywall and is not free. This website has no paywall and only serves up the MRH content that is free. As an RE subscriber you are expected to download the Running Extra PDF using the link we sent you and then open the downloaded RUNNING EXTRA PDF of interest using an offline PDF reader app. This site can not access your PDF reader app directly, you have to do that offline on your device.

Universal freight loco?

Over the years there have been a number of magazine articles and books about the USRA, and this piece wraps up a lot of good informaton in a nice sized article  that is not overwhelming.  E.L. Huddleston's book "Uncle Sam's  Locomotives" gives a good view of all types of USRA and related engines and goes into detail for those interested.

Look up the names of the men on the USRA  locomotive design panels and you will find top from many railroads. And if you compare USRA locos with their contemporaries on various roads, you will see that many of the best features were combined to build the USRA engines.   The interchangeability of parts between USRA locomotives made a lot of sense, for if say, B&O needed a part that was out of their stock, they could call across town and borrow the part  from New York Central, (also a USRA road) replacing it when B&O's next part order came. And the interchangeability of parts between USRA engine types reduced the inventories necessary by the railroads, saving money.USRA Mikes often lasted till the end of steam operations on their respective railroads.

The first USRA Mikado, the #4500 for the Baltimore and Ohio RR. had different cab styling than all other USRA Mikes, and this changed the overall look of the engine. The problem is that some models have that unique cab. Fortunately, most model manufacturers simulate standard USRA cabs. Sorry-  I didn't intend to write a book here, but so much about the railroads has been forgotten already, I (most of us) try to keep the old days alive.  A very useful article that opens up the whole subject of the USRA steam engines.
