Fantastic Job in Small Space

You did a fantastic job in such a small space.

I need to reread this article several times to see if I get ideas for my logging peninsula.

Fantastic

One of the nicest small railroads I’ve seen. I have a similar small room in my garage that I have been thinking of building a small layout in to get out of the basement in the summer. I am looking a granite quarries or possible logging. Thanks for sharing what can be done in such a small space. ????

Beautiful backdrop

I love the backdrop. Also, I remember reading the John Allen would take photos of his models and then re-work them until the looked good in the photos. I agree that studying photos of your layout is about the best way to get it looking right. Very nice work. Hope I can still enjoy this hobby at 83!

Logging

One of my favorite subjects and 2 in the same issue

I would love to see a track plan for this layout to see how things are laid out.

I am also curious about the source for the geared locos.

It is real encouraging to see a small layout done this well.

Well! I'm encouraged

You  have done a wonderful job of building a beautiful layout. My layout is just a bit bigger at about 7'x12' with a duck under entrance. I hope to get the same atmosphere you have achieved. So I am encouraged that I too can achieve my vision.

Thank you for sharing

Bingo!

Best layout visit I've seen ANYWHERE. A beautiful work of art with so many vistas in such a small space.

I too find this layout incredibly inspirational.

Thank you Peter!

Nice layout, trackplan?

Nice layout, and nice to see such a nice layout in a small space.  It would be nice to see a track plan.

Very nicely done

But I'm with the others, could we see a track plan?

Author didn't include a track plan

The author didn't include a track plan. Maybe we can convince him to post one here on this thread.

A small layout with a big feeling

Beautiful scenery, and interesting use of a second-level shelf.  I just wish there was a track plan (no matter how rough) to orient me to how Peter used the small space available to him.

Need a track plan

I have been looking for an article about a layout of this size. This one looks great, BUT I would like to see a track plan to assist me and others in designing a two level layout  in such a small space.

Two levels in small space

I think the article shows clearly enough what makes two levels work in a space that small - switchbacks rather than a helix.  Figure 16 shows one switchback pretty clearly.  I think there's a second one that's a little harder to see on the back wall in figure 17.

Anyway, switchbacks use very little real estate to gain elevation, and this layout makes good use of them.

Yeah, pretty self explanatory, an interchange on the left bottom level, mill scene on the right, switchbacks to the logging camp on top left. What is impressive is the fine scenery and craftsmanship. Track plan would only be useful for the same size space, anyone else would be better off creating a customized one for their own space.....DaveB

Track plan, please

The author is a wee bit older than I am, but this layout is right up my alley.  I love the "demountable"  train room in the garage, similar to John Olson's Jerome and Southwestern many years ago.  Reminds me a bit of the Tioga Pass, also many years ago, built by John Allen's pal Major Jim Findley in a mobile home after his retirement

But I would not (if I were editor) have accepted it without a track plan, even a dimensioned sketch. Did I miss minimum radii?  Maybe. How wide is the benchwork?

When you get down to these kinds of spaces, you are always looking to see how other people make the most of them. This is beautifully done.  The mill looks terrific. The idea of using Suydam building frames with wood siding is terrific. But inches count, and not just in radii. Even an overhead shot from a step ladder would help understand the achievement.

Switchbacks aren't just for logging

The DL&W had a switchback to get down into Ithaca NY

switchbacks

THanks for the suggestion.. I enlarged figure 16 which provided an excellent view of the switchbacks.  A layout or overhead photo would still be of interest.

Very Nice, well thought out

Love the idea, and the execution, keep us posted, do some eye in the sky pictures so we can see the track plan.

Thanks for the great information.

Perfect!

That's good enough for me. Makes it easier to see what's going on and gives me that much more appreciation for the layout!

Trackplan

Thanks for posting the track plan!  Comparing the plan to the photos makes it clearer just how successfully that 7x8 room has been used.

Thanks

Really appreciate the sketches of the plan. Makes things much clearer.

Container size layout

This makes a 20’ container look very appealing. With a clear interior space of seven feet wide, after furring out for insulation, electrical, layout supports, etc, the 20’ depth would/could even have room for a workbench or restroom!
