Scroll down to the October issue post and...

I saw the October issue was posted (thanks Joe!) and downloaded the issue. Looked at the table of contents, went to the page with the signal article. No fees and easy download.

Enjoy!

Thanks Benny, the series has been four years in the making.  It has been a challenging series to write.

Jas, I wanted to embark on signaling on the old SASME layout, primarily to give a means of communication between the yard masters and the sidings entering the yards so the yardmaster could signal to the inbound trains waiting the enter the yards after utilizing our phone system to contact the yard master; instead of the yardmaster giving a time limit before proceeding, the yardmaster would be able to communicate when the line was clear by changing the light from green to red.

The club voted to stay in the dark for all future endeavors, it appears signaling makes some people as antsy as DCC did to those in love with DC...oh well, I'll do it on my own some day!!

I like the tricolor LEDs, they really help increase the potential.

Benny I can understand the feeling of trepidation about installing signals.  One look at an SE8C and/or BDL168 board would make most think twice, but what you have described for your club is a straight-forward install.

The aim of the article series was directed at modellers such as yourself to show it's not that bad, you just need some guidance and information.  And I have to agreed, the tri-colored LED's have made a huge improvement to my installation experience and the operations of my signals.

I never needed to see it wasn't so bad, I'M just the guy who wants to do it once there's a layout again.

Signals for where you couldn't see the signals

ignals_0.JPG The HOMES club layout in Hamilton, Ontario, has one long hidden section of bi-directional, single track. It connects the staging yard in another room to the west end of the layout roughly 60 feet of track away. (Each block is 4 sections of flex track.) To make matters worse, two blocks are a reversing section, and bad things happen if a following train enters the reversing section before the previous train leaves. It has to run efficiently or the whole layout bogs down, especially during public open houses. A signal panel at each end solves the problem. (Our is driven by CMRI, but any signalling system would work.)

Great mimic panel

That's a great idea bnbayer.  I was thinking about doing this for the helix on my layout that runs down to the staging deck.  That way operators and the dispatcher can see the location of trains within the helix.

Thanks Tom for the kind comments!   Your CTC Panel build would make an excellent article on MRH too...

Cheers, Jas...
