Does anyone know when Canadian National Railways introduced the new nose heralds on their FA2s? And when did they remove the external bell on the roof?

Which "new" herald?

If you're referring to the modern "noodle" logo, it was first introduced system-wide in 1961.

I think the green/yellow scheme always used the round maple leaf logo.

bell placement

CN started to move the bells on their various F units (F3A, F7A, FA1, FA2, FPA2 and FPA4) onto the roof of the units in the very late 1950's or early 1960's.  The earliest photo I have shows F3A 9003 with a roof mounted bell in 1963, and there is a photo of the 9003 on cnrphotos.com in 1962 without the roof mounted bell so that is a fairly tight time frame.  Also a shot of FA-2 9422 on cnrphotos.com with a roof mounted bell in 1964 in the green and yellow scheme.

I have shots of FPA-2 6753, FA-1 9402/9403 and FP9A 6503 in roughly 1957-58 (no date on the slides) with no roof mounted bell.  That should narrow down your time frame for the bells a little bit.

@Marc, Thanks. I noticed,

@Marc,

Thanks.

I noticed, looking at pics of CN FA2s from 1951 to 1955, and none have mounted bell on their roofs.

Why I was asking is that Rapido has models of CNR FA2s, but all have bells on the roof.

I have found an image of one with the bell on the roof in 1962. A simple solution would just be to remove the bell's mount and fill the hole on the Rapido model if wanting to model 1956.

@Chris van der Heide, I'm

@Chris van der Heide,

I'm refering to the round logo. One had "CNR" on a maple leaf and the other "Canadian National Railways" on a maple leaf. I'm trying to figure out when the latter was put on the FA2s. I'm trying to find out if they were all delivered in the "CNR".

Simpler maple leaf CNR was the original

The simple logo was the original, lasting into the mid-50's IIRC.

@King_coalI'm still trying

@King_coal

I'm still trying to find an image in 1956 of one with the original herald or newer one.

So far up to 1955 I'm seeing the original herald.  I model 1956 so I'm trying to figure out which Rapido model would be appropriate. Also trying to pinpoint when they started applying the newer herald to the FA2s. So far I suspect all were delivered with the original herald.

According to CN Lines Sig,

According to CN Lines Sig, the newer CNR round monogram, came after 1954, but I can't find any images of diesels with it on them in 1956.

I also found out that the bell was moved from inside the carbody to the roof in 1958.

Went through my books also,, but no images from 1956. It seems railfans weren't taking much photos that year ; )
