I am working on design proposals for a new layout for a 'workshop' in our detached garage. I have two basic designs to review for advice/critique.

Starting with John Armstrong's 'Givens/Druthers'.

Track location vs Scenery vs Buildings - a Layout Design Question

This question is about a design aspect I haven’t seen discussed much.

Question: to how much detail did you plan the location of scenic features (ie, rivers, canyons, etc) and structure placement before starting to cut roadbed for a mainline?

Trying to locate Joe Fugate's "Operating potential formula"....

I have old/broken links to Joe Fugate's www.siskiyou-railfan.net website that had his formulas for calculating a layouts 'operation potential'. Does anyone have an URL/link to where these pages might be found?

Gravel pit Tracks

Attached below, its what I have for a small gravel company. It has the main track in where the cars will be loaded(top track), and below where the full cars wait for pickup. The Gravel company has its own switcher that moves cars around. I am wondering, with the little room available in this area, if I could enhance it, or just leave it the way it is. Any ideas are welcomed...

OK, so I've decided to stop work on my 4' X 8' N scale freelance layout and go bigger. I'm looking at a new layout that is sectional so I can move/pack away as necessary. It will be mainly run in my garage. I figure I can do a U shaped layout to get maximum running room. Long sides will be 16' and cross end will be 8'. I'm still debating on width 18" or 24". 24" would allow more room for switching.

Era will be around the trun of the century, 1900's using Steam locos.

Double Deck Layouts-- Upper deck Width

Since I have limited experience operating on a double deck railroad, and I am in the process of planning one (see http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/blog/16735), what have you noticed about the upper decks width in relation to the lower deck.

I assume (and we all know what that does), the upper deck is generally narrower than the lower especially if there is a detailed area of the lower deck. But have you seen or operated on one where upper and lower are the same width?

Hello Everyone.

I am looking for ideas for the new layout, the room is about 28 x 13 with a separate room for the helix.

I have been trying to figure out the best way for the bench work but think I am stuck with what I have come up with.

Happy New Year fellow railroaders,

With the new year brings me new hope that I will actually construct my basement layout this year. Hopefully even starting this week. My layout will consume a room 14x32' and be in HO scale. it will represent a line running from Hagerstown to and terminate in Baltimore in 1943. It will be double deck with main deck at 40-42" and upper deck at 58-64".
