Not so fast..... This could

Not so fast.....

This could have some value for some people.  I used to use my Blackberry's "Notes" section to keep track of my inventory; however, it was "klugie" and I sometimes bought duplicate in error.  Perhaps this could solve that problem?  I'd be interested to hear experience from anyone that's using the product.

Just don't buy

That's exactly what I said in ORGINAL post. It's the just say No. If people want information for marketing let them pay for it. Stop giving information away.

I'm having trouble following this

I'm having trouble following this line of thinking - I look at their website and their app page and I don't see the epitome of the evil empire in this. I mean c'mon, this looks like a useful app and at $5 it's a bargain. It does appear to have some bugs, however, based on the feedback - but nobody mentions this evil intent to harvest all your personal info anywhere.

Sorry Joe could not disagree more

You put all that info on their. And they will sell it as marketing information as to what sells. They made money from my info and they want me to pay for it. Did not say it evil, just say make it free and then put disclaimer of what they will do with info.

I am selling I Pad getting Surface 8 Pro

Sorry you have to warp the I pad to pro tech it. Will not have that problem with Surface . Will down load free ware excel and use it and only I will have assess to info, I will be happy to sell it for marketing information. It is a capitalist world. I would strongly recommend you talk to some IT people about your very open computer. Think the fact that most are recommending you use two computers tells you were we are.

...

It's their program, they'll do with it [and the data it collects] as they wish.  If they get people to pay for it, because it is actually worth something, then they will charge for it, and collect well.

Where did you get this information

that Model Train App sells information to suppliers?

It's all relative

It's all relative ... we're talking about the price of a good hamburger here - $5.

In my experience, nobody in the model railroading hobby is getting rich - the hobby's a niche and iphones/ipads, while growing in popularity quickly, are still a niche. So with model trains mixed with iphones and ipads, you've got a niche of a niche, out of which you then need to find who's interested - and that could be a very small number indeed.

As to selling your information, be careful making that accusation - suspicions aren't enough. You need to know definitely that's the practice before you start making wild slanderous statements about a company.

Finally, while readers can freely access MRH, it is not free. Advertisers foot the bill and it costs many thousands every month to produce. Readers get it for free and they always will get it for free, but even readers pay a cost - they have to put up with lots of ad pages in every issue, ads on the MRH web site, etc.

Be careful insisting everything should be free - if something is of value, there is nothing wrong in asking you to pay for it. If you don't think it's worth the money, then don't buy it. Nobody's holding a gun to your head insisting you buy it or else.

In Fact....

The only thing I see that Model Train App's is doing wrong, is making the app only for the i-fruit devices.

I was all set to buy the app in spite of Art's wild allegations, but unfortunately it's not available for the Android based device, too bad I say...  It's only $5.  I can't even get a good burger for that price in Canada!

Advertisements

Joe,

The ads are a great part of MRH. You get to see what is out there, what stuff does, and what it cost. You can link directly to their web sites.  I dropped MR because it had fewer good articles and fewer advertisers.

All this stuff and ads too, it just doesn't get any better than this! Yep it's free too!

Regards,

John

Sorry Joe, I have to disagree with you there. Readers get it for free AND they get the EXTRA BENEFIT of having access to all the best model railroad hobby suppliers directly in the magazine and conveniently located throughout the web site. They're not just random Ads. You are connecting suppliers directly to their target market. I.e. the people most likely to want what they have to sell. Not only is that a benefit to suppliers, its also a convenience for the buyers. Everything in one place. Even if you aren't buying NOW chances are good you will soon, and now you know where to get it.

Thank you for the ads, Joe. Its just one more way that you guys have covered all the bases and provide an excellent platform and service model to everyone. There are others in the industry that would be well served to study your business model closely-- and without the "greed First" mentality.

Haven't looked

at the product, but having an inventory list with me on my phone would be very helpful for me, especially when travelling.  I can't possibly keep track of every road number of all my equipment.  Having that list with me when I go to a new hobby shop somewhere or even run across a swap meet or something would be very helpful.  Sure, if I got a duplicate item, I could renumber it, but if I had a choice, I'd just buy the ones I don't already have.  For $5, that is hardly anything for the convenience it would be.
