Sorry if I missed it but I'm trying to figure out exactly how to use the " button. Everytime I use it I get multiple grey bars or italics. totally Clueless in Iowa.....

I pull my hair out...

...over the quote button!

I would say it is one of the less graceful "features" of the Drupal environment.

I tend to paste the quote into my post and then hit enter a couple of times to give me some blank lines below the quote, otherwise I can't seem to place the cursor outside the quote box later.

Then I select the test of the quote, a rather frustrating task at best.  You must carefully select the text, and even then some of it will probably be arbitrarily deselected for you.

Once I have the quote selected, I click the quote button.  This usually works the first time.  If the result is not what you wanted, click the quote button to undo what it did.

Like I say, this usually works for me.

Your mileage may vary.

Even simpler

It's not hard to quote text here.  Just copy whatever you want to quote, then paste it into the text field.  Click anywhere in the line of quoted text (or highlight all of it, if there are multiple paragraphs - something I try to avoid generally) and click the quote button in the icon bar across the top.  Then, start a new line (which will likely look like it's part of the quoted text) and click the quote button again.  The button toggles the quote feature for everything in a paragraph.  You don't even have to highlight the text.

How about that!  Thanks Ken, it works.  I was able to drop down a line (return) and then click the quote button and type this.

Proof you can teach an old dog new tricks!

Thanks again!!

Yes, what Ken said

Yes, what Ken said. It's very simple to use and it's paragraph by paragraph. If you're doing anything else, you're making it a lot harder on yourself than it needs to be!

Giving it a try

Wow!  It easy to use!  I've never used this feature but will in the future.

Its always puzzled me

why there isn't a "quote" link on each post that automatically places the quote into a post and then allows you to edit it after.  Or, better, when you hit the "reply" button, it doesn't automatically quote that post.  I see no real purpose for the reply button here, other than it puts your reply box underneath it.  Almost every other forum I'm on has a reply or quote feature.  Granted, I'm not on a lot of sites, but I just found it odd.

There is a quote copy function, but it's buggy

There is a quote copy function that you're talking about, but it's buggy, so we've left it turned off.

Also, I'm not a fan of a one button quote copy post function, so I've never bothered to see if we could make it work.

With the one button quote copy function, people abuse it constantly, requoting entire posts repeatedly. That's the worst thing about Yahoo groups, for instance. Pages and pages of requoted posts ... my eyes just start to cross. People won't edit down a quoted previous post, they just find one line in the post they like and then they requote the entire dang post because it's easier.

I ironically, if you make it just a little harder to requote, people will only requote what's needed for the context, which I find to be much better.

I completely agree.  One mailing list which I am on has rules (loosely enforced) about quoting.  It makes it much easier to tell what the poster is commenting on, rather that having to re-read an entire conversation.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one with this problem. Bravo!

Had this been an Emergency most likely you would never get it anyhow as all broadcasting and internet communications would have failed entirely.
