Here is a video I did well over a year ago, and put onto youtube, this series of videos got somewhat good feedback from the regular viewers.
In this video I show how to change out the axle gears that crack with regularity on Proto 2000 units, and I replace them using Athearn parts.

A question -- You said the Athearn replacements work fine on the older Proto-2000 line. Do they work for the later models produced over the last few years?

Yes they do, I found this out
Yes they do, I found this out with a P2k GP7, it was from the newer run just before Walthers got hold of Life Like, be advised however, you can't just replace one, you must replace all 4 or 6 drive wheel axle sets.
