Some Of My V Scale Modeling
Sat, 2009-04-04 03:59 — betsy662
Heres a couple of views of one of my V scale layouts, this is the Durango layout, or route, it has 45 miles of track running between Durango and Silverton,

Heres a view of the 479 coming around the first curve on the Highline.

And heres the 476 pulling the first train back up the Highline toward Rockwood.

Trainz or MTS?
Took me a couple minutes to figure out that "V" scale meant virtual. Which program do you use?

Trainz TRS2006, I would love
Trainz TRS2006, I would love to get TS2009, but I don't believe my computer can handle it at the moment....
Very Good
I enjoyed your videos. What program do you use to make the videos? Just wondering what is involved in saving the video from the game?

V-Scale model railroading
How do you make this? I've read a bit about how others have gone about creating virtual model railroads but for some reason I can't seem to get my head around the process. I think this might be a good article to think about doing especially given the fact that virtual railroad doesn't require any more space than a computer occupies. Of course the model railroading industry can't really sell much in the way of supplies, rolling stock and engines. I wonder if they would have sold anything to folks who are vritual modelers anyway.
On the other hand, this is one to show how things were done in an era where moving pictures weren't invented or just weren't made of the process.

I use fraps, available free
I use fraps, available free from fraps.com, works great, if you pay for the registration, you can get keep the cameras rolling so to speak, I use the freeware part, so I only get 30 second shots, but it is about the best one out there for this type of video capture, I then load the AVI's into Windows Movie Maker, and basically put it together.
The thing that makes Trainz
The thing that makes Trainz work better in my opinion than Microsoft Train Simulator is the fact that Trainz is so user friendly, its very simple to make layouts, its very simple to download much of the freeware, in fact, everything you see in those pics above is freeware, the locos, the cars, the textures used for the scenery, and on that particular route, the map, or baseboards were also a free download, there is payware out there, but there is so much freeware, that unless you want something really bad enough, you don't need to pay for anything other than the initial software, oh! And yes, the first class download ticket to get things off of the Download Station on an unlimited bases....
Model RR vs. Simulated RR
At the risk of being a bit of a wet blanket here, there are plenty of forums for rail simulation programs and Trainz specifically. I thought the Model Railroad Hobbyist forums were for discussions about model railroads. Am I wrong?

If the shoe fits...
Ok, as you said yourself, you are a wet blanket. :o)
Since MRH themselves are not complaining about this thread and no one is hijacking your thread to talk about MRR SIM Software I would suggest that if the thread does not interest you, that you ignore it. Just a suggestion of course. What you choose to do with the suggestion I'll leave up to your best judgement.
Trainz 2006 is great and has kept me sane through the years when I could not have a layout for one reason or another. While it certainly pales when compared to an actual layout I believe it has it's place in the world of model railroading. After all, the hobby varies by individual. I think we are all allowed to enjoy it in our own way and as we see fit so if that means virtual model railroading, then that's great too. IMO
Nice to have the info available
I have not paid attention to the V software, so I have not known the range of stuff available. It's nice to have this thread (or other similar ones) to access for an info update. As you say, Blue, it really doesn't get in the way if I'm not interested.

While in my opinion, V scale
While in my opinion, V scale railroading will eventually be the hobby, it isn't at the moment, and not likely to be in our lifetimes, so for now, HO, N, O, S and G are all pretty safe from the V.........
