Rooftop question-early rooftops? Scenery and structures

I found the article on detailing rooftops inspirational.  However, I don't see any info on detailing earlier roofs.  A brick building in an old downtown today will have all sorts of things up there--but what about the same building in the 1880's?  or the 1920's?  Any info or places to poke about?

Roof tops

The roof top article I did was based on roof that where built in the 1920. No a/c units but a lot of skylights where used. Gas lines going to the building on the roof would be more viable than today. Some of the pictures I took of the skylights and roof jacks where changed by the replacement of the new roof.

Look at Ron Pare's blog post "Hot in the City" posted today

He has 2 photos that appear to be late 19th or early 20th century. The roofs have significantly fewer items on them than seen on post WWI structures. you can see a number of skylights on a few buildings. Jerry

1900's rooftops

Search Shorpy for Detroit Publish Co.pictures.  They have lots of photos of urban areas taken from high vantage points from the late 1890's to the 1920's.

Walthers Roof Panel details

I am working on the Walthers Sterling Consolidated Dairy.  Thank you for the roof top article.  The kit has lots of detail items that I am now using.

The rooftop panels have molded vents, presumably plumbing vents.  But there is also a square molding about center.  The photo of the completed model does not show any roof details attached to this square.  I am wondering if this is meant to be a base for some vent, a roof access hatch, sun roof or what.  Have you any suggestions?
