Is anyone else getting dropped more frequently than usual?  My login seems to get dropped every few hours, often when I switch from one thread to another.  It's been happening for the last week or so and is becoming quite frustrating.

No problem here

No problem here ... I have to log in every day or so, but that's it.

Does it happen consistently across browsers or computers/devices for your login?

dropped login

Well, I have only IE & Win 7, but there has been no change in my computer or software for many months, and the drops are a relatively recent phenomenon.  We are experiencing periodic loss of internet connection - a local provider problem - but that too existed prior to my reported experience with MRH.

Happened to me

I was reading the posts. I went back to "recent posts" and discovered I wasn't logged in. Also going back to the "recent posts' page it seems to take a long time. This has started happening in the last couple of weeks. I've made no change at my end. Doesn't happen all the time, very intermittent.

Other than that it's working fine.

Joe, I have had to log in at least twice a day for the last 3 Da

Days.  Some is going on with the log in on the MRH site.  Please take a look with your software vendor to find out what is behind it.

Our provider's response

The default our Internet service provider for our Drupal site told us is 24 hours, give or take. You will required to login at least once every 24 hours. If it's more frequent than that, then check your cookie settings to make sure model-railroad-hobbyist.com and mrhmag.com are trusted sites.

That's what they told us - if what people are experiencing something different than this, then let us know.

We do know some sites will let you stay logged in for weeks, but that's a security risk. Other sites like banks will log you out after 10 minutes of inactivity - so our ISP's 24 hour stance is a balance.

Why long sessions are a problem

Long sessions are a problem because they increase the likelihood some hacker could hack your session, and either route you unknowingly to a look-alike site and harvest your passord, or they could impersonate you and post spam, or they can mess with the MRH site and make pages redirect wherever they like or do other nefarious acts.

If you google on the topic of long sessions, you will see the recommendation to mitigate against this sort of hacker attack is to make your sessions shorter - with 10-20 minutes considered ideal for sites like banks where protecting against hacking is vital.

Also, as an aside, never use the same user id and password for MRH as you use for something like your banking provider - otherwise if your 24 hour long session gets hacked, they could now have the login credentials to your bank account. Bad, very bad.

No problems in sonoma

Joe:

I haven't been dropped for so long, I don't even think about it. I use both Firefox and Safari depending on which MAC I am running.

not worried about 24 hours

I'm quite happy with the 24-hour limit; it's a good compromise.  And I haven't changed cookie settings or browsers or anything else as far as I know.  But Something Has Been Happening!

Just happen to me again. I was logged in for around 1/2 hour, then logged me out. Same thing happen last night. Also been happening for the last few months. I have cleared my cookies and every thing else that I could think of. Still get disconnected after 30 to 40 min.

In cases like this, pays to note when

Does this happen any time of day or is it certain times of the day? Finding a pattern really helps get to the root cause. So here's my request. Keep a log for a couple days. Note time of day when you start a session, when you end and what browser/OS you're using. When you get a dropped log in, note when and what browser. Do that for a couple days and then send the log to us using contact us/other. We will then have our ISP go look on our server and see what was happening at that time and hopefully we can spot what's causing it. Our ISP simply says it should not be happening. Also, it's not happening to me or many others, so we need to find out what makes you special.

Never is a big word...

I am tempted to say this never happens to me anymore, but that would just tempt fate, Murphy's law would surface and I'd be complaining about my login being dropped.

dropped

I seem to stay signed on now for several days, then get dropped in the middle of an evening session on MRH.  Is there a standard algorithm which determines length of sign-on and time of discard?

Booted

That happened to me last night. I wasn't posting, just catching up, when suddenly all posts showed no new messages. I'd been able to get in without logging on for several days prior. Then suddenly no new posts. Took me a minute to figure out what had happened. No big deal, just a little confusing.
