So my MRM subscription is expiring.  I am considering not renewing because of MRH.  I am able to find the same information in both, and MRH is free.  When I am looking for something specific, I start with the advertisers at MRH.  So I think I am going to save the $42 and put that money towards my railroad and continue to get my info from MRH.  Thanks for being free!!!!

The ONLY thing I miss.........

........ from the commercial press is the monthly plans, either rolling stock or structures (wink, wink!).

All I can say is - write 'em,

All I can say is - write 'em, and we'll publish them if they're up to snuff (and try and help you get them there if they aren't)

In our format, the way to do plans is SketchUp

In our format, we'd love to get some SketchUp prototype drawlings. Done this way, the object can be rotated in 3 dimensions, as well as output to more traditional programs like Autocad.

If we can get some prototype plans for interesting subjects (not just anything) then we'll certainly consider it.

So I should get off my rear and finish the sketchup file I've been working on I.E. Frisco's PB tower? ;P

It's been something I'm prepping for the cutter...

No More Paper Mags

Since I discovered MRH almost a year ago, I have completely stopped all of my paper subscriptions in the hobby.  No more paper magazines for me since MRH and I hope MRH is always online & always free?  Thanks MRH, you've saved me a bundle in paper mag costs that I have been able to put towards a DCC set up I've been wanting to try.

Thanks for the kind words

Thanks for the kinds words about MRH.

While I can see how saving money on the paper mags is helpful, MRH still has gaps. For instance, not all major advertisers are onboard with us yet (Atlas, Intermountain, Bachmann, MRC, Woodland Scenics, to name a few). Also, we don't have the huge staff who can do all the fabulous track plans or prototype drawings like you get the paper mags.

Personally, we don't want to miss anything good, so we also subscribe to the paper mags (digital copies preferred, now that they offer them).

We appreciate the vote of confidence, but be careful you're not missing something important by dropping the paper mags.

HELP MRH BY ENCOURAGING THESE VENDORS TO ADVERTISE WITH US ...

If you'd like to encourage the hobby vendors we've listed to get onboard as an MRH advertiser, here's their contact links - click each link to send an immediate email:

Atlas

Intermountain

Bachmann

MRC

Woodland Scenics

Your emails make a big difference - they listen to modelers!

Surviving on MRH

Joe, I totally understand what you mean by possibly missing something important in the paper mags however, with all the info available on the web today and having access to MRH, I can survive without paper mags, lol.  My big issues with the paper mags in recent years is the amount of advertising in them?  While I do understand magazines survive by their advertisers and not by their subscribers, I have a real issue when I'm paying "X" amount of dollars for a 104 page paper magazine and something like 40 pages of that magazine is nothing but advertisements.  I'm not paying to read advertisements, I want the stories, the plans, the photographs, etc...

I'm quite confident that in time MRH will have all the necessary components of those paper mags and until that time comes, this old model railroader will survive just fine with MRH online magazine!

Done...

I sent email to all 5 of the vendors you listed. I hope it does help. Intermountain is located here in Longmont so I hope a nudge from a local has an even greater effect. I get way more out of MRH than any of the other mags.

Paper and Digital I love 'em all

I subscribe to several paper mags as well as MRH.  MR, RMC, and NMRA (in all it's forms) for 40 years now.  MRH since it started.

I find that each magazine has a different focus so that they compliment each other.  MR is very oriented towards getting a layout built, especially that first one.  RMC is about model building.  MRH is more focused on later layouts after the first and second ones.  NMRA is all over the map, but during it's Golden Age (Whit Towers' years) it was the philosophical magazine (not that everyone agreed with the editor).  Taken as a whole they provide pretty good coverage into this fascinating hobby.

I even love the advertising - after all, it's all about stuff I'm interested in.  I usually make a pass through each magazine just reading the ads.  With MRH it's easy to go to the advertiser's website, a plus for the digital age.

In any event I love them all and save back issues in binders and hard drive.

Enjoy

Paul

$3.58 x 12 = $42,96. You're just paying the same price by issue with Kindle.

We're with you, Paul. We're Model Railroading info junkies, and we can't get enough of any of the model railroading magazines. The move to digital is welcome - we love being able to carry many months around on a tablet for when we're on the go. Beats the paper mags all to heck for that.
