Just read Joe Fugate's article on the Gorre & Dephetid layout of John Allen.  I was very lucky to be stationed at the Presidio of Monterey in 1971 as a very young 19 year old in the Air Force.  I saw an article by him and found him in the phone book, called up and he invited me over.  I was amazed and overwhelmed by his layout.  Just wish that I knew more to ask him and learn.  I still look for his photos to recall that visit.

Sorry Ronmsal, I didn't

Sorry Ronmsal,

I didn't take any pictures.  Didn't even own a camera back then.  I was a lowly E-2 in the Air Force then.  I look for pictures in magazines to recollect the visit.

Today's 106 years after his birth

A few of us in northern CA are getting together for a pancake breakfast to remember the man and his impact on our pursuit of the hobby.

Original passes

An attendee at the breakfast, who operated on the Gorre & Daphetid, showed original passes that John printed up and signed.

Give anything to have one of

Give anything to have one of those! This hobby would not even be a hobby for me without John Allen and his immeasurable influence on it.

Big influence

Friend of me has translate the original book of Kalmbach in french; this book was a good seller in Europe.

His influence was well over the atlantic and my own Maclau River has numerous reference of the GD line like the Port Allen town with a port and a N scale version of the car ferry Anabel.

The design of my layout include some feature of the GD line including a like sim's loop.

Some cars are labeled GD lines too.

His influence is recognized by the greatest modelers lik Georges Sellios, Howard Zane by example.

For so much modelers I would like to say, thank you John to show the way a model train could be.
