WESTERN REFINING...PHOENIX AZ

bnsf6951's picture

to all

here are some pics of my next project. the industry is called "western refining" it is just a few doors to the south of mariani distributing. this is the second of 3 industries in this section of my layout.. the prototype has 16 vertical tanks. my model will have only 8 do to lack of available space & also has numerous smaller tanks. the open framed structure is one of the larger storage buildings in this complex. do to lack of room i can only model one of the 2 large storage buildings. the vertical tanks in the pics are temps. i have the proper tanks on order from elvin howland of layout concepts. the info i have states this facility produces lubricants. traffic in for this industry is tankers (of coarse) & box cars. traffic out is by tankers trucks & semi trucks

hope you like the pics & your comments,& questions are welcome

  thanks for looking

Good looking industries, BUT

I would suggest that you stop using OSB sheeting for your layout top. Plywood is 1000% better for more reasons than I can list.

PLYWOOD

HELLO ART

THANKS FOR THE GREAT ADVICE. BEING ON A FIXED INCOME, I LOOK FOR THE LEAST EXPENSIVE WAY TO DO THINGS. I KNOW THAT PLY WOULD BE BETTER BUT, OSB IS A LITTLE CHEAPER SO I HAVE TO MAKE SACRIFICES. I WILL BE STARTING THE FRAME WORK FOR THE SECTION OF MY LAYOUT & I WILL SEE IF PLY IS FEASIBLE.AS I AM WRITING THIS EMAIL, I AM THINKING THAT PLY MIGHT BE THE WAY TO GO BECAUSE THE REST OF THE LAYOUT WILL NOT BE WIDER THAN 14" SO I WILL BE ABLE TO GET 3 @ 96" X 14"....THANKS FOR MAKING ME USE THAT THING ON MY SHOULDER BESIDES A PLACE TO PUT MY HAT

Western Refining

Spectacular work on Western Refining, both as a model and as a representation of the real thing.  Hard to believe it's N scale - I'd be happy to get results half that good in HO!

You sure pack a bunch of industrial switching into a small space - are there going to be other businesses in this industrial area, also?  One operator could probably stay busy for an entire session just turning over the tank cars and box cars that will go to these two customers.

As for picking the most economical material for the job - I sympathize completely!  Right now saving a few dollars is the difference between railroading and no railroading in my shortline empire (such as it is).  My current approach right now is bashing chemical tank cars out of spare Athearn parts and one-inch wood dowel for the car body.  I'll be the first to admit the results are far from perfect, but my cars cost me about six dollars each - as opposed to $34 for an RTR model.  I'd like a whole string of the RTR models - but just can't do it.  SO, if you can find an affordable alternative to make your layout possible, so much the better!

Keep the photos coming!

Nice job!

INDUSTRIES

HELLO ROG

THANKS FOR THE GREAT COMMENTS. THIS INDUSTRY IS ONE OF 3 INDUSTRIES IN THIS AREA OF MY LAYOUT. IT IS THE SECOND OF THE 3.  IF YOU CHECK MY OTHER POST YOU WILL SEE THE FIRST THAT I BUILT. IT'S CALLED "MARIANI DISTRIBUTING" OR YOU CAN GOT TO TRAINLIFE.COM LOOK FOR ME (BNSF6951) MY POST THERE ALSO HAVE SOME RAILFANNING VIDEOS. IF YOU GO THERE YOU WILL ALSO SEE MY FIRST PROJECT FOR THIS LAYOUT.CALLED "SMITH PIPE & STEEL."

YES THING ARE MUCH HARDER TO BUILD IN "N" SCALE BUT I GET A GREAT SENSATION OF ACCOMPLISHMENT WHEN I SEE THE FINISHED PRODUCT.

THIS IS NOT A FREE LANCE LAYOUT. IT IS A PROTOTYPE OF BNSF'S PEAVINE SUBDIVISION. THIS LINE RUNS 194 MILES FROM PHOENIX TO ASH FORK AZ. SINCE I LIVE IN PHOENIX & LOVE BNSF, WHAT BETTER LINE FOR ME TO MODEL.. OF CAUSE THE LACK OF ROOM CONFINES ME OF HOW MUCH I CAN BUILD

THE INDUSTRIES I AM WORKING ON NOW ARE LOCATED JUST TO THE WEST OF MOBEST YARD. THE WESTERN REFINING IS NO WHERE CLOSE TO BEING DONE. STILL HAVE TO BUILD RAIL & TRUCK LOADING & UNLOADING RAMPS.THE NEXT INDUSTRIALIZED SECTION WILL BE JUST OUTSIDE PHOENIX PROPER.. THERE WILL BE AT LEAST 2 INDUSTRIES THERE, MAYBE 3..NOT SURE.

ONCE I GET PAST THE 4 MAJOR TOWNS THAT HAVE INDUSTRY, THERE WILL BE NOTHING BUT SCENERY. DESERT THAT CHANGES INTO PINE TREE COUNTRY.

ANYWAY I NEED TO GO, DINNER TIME

THANKS AGAIN & KEEP WATCHING FOR MORE UPDATES

I live in Canada, but go to Phoenix often. Great RR to model.

Keep Track N!

PEAVINE

hi Paul

Glad to here someone else is modeling the same road as me.I am assuming that you have read my comments & blogs & that i live here in Phoenix. I am trying to do the entire road from Mobest to Ash Fork. I am limited to room to do this prototype (i live in an apartment & I gave up my bedroom for this layout)  What made you choose the "Peavine"? I would think that you would do a Canadian road ( especially with all those pretty locos you guys have). Are you in the process or are you complete? I would be very interested in seeing some pics. of your layout.  Are you doing the industries in & around Phoenix,Glendale,Peoria & Surprise area?

How often do you get to Phoenix? The next time you are here, please feel free to look me up. Maybe we can get together & discuss our layouts & plans & even play trains...lol

I am DCC as far as locos go & i don't think i will go any further as far as DCC operated turnouts are concerned, however i would like to get the JMRI system, but I was told it doesn't' work with MRC equipment.

Anyway thanks for taking the time to check out my progress & if you go to www.trainlife.com/bnsf6951 you will see more pics of my layout & some railfanning of the of the Peavine.

thanks again,

Vinny...aka...bnsf6951

Peavine

Vinni,

I am also modelling the Peavine from a long distance. But I am not anywere near the quality of your modeling, which is great.

And good to see you around, too, Paul. There seems to bee at least some people modeling or getting inspiration from the Peavine. I have a friend here in Norway who also was going to model the Peavine in N, but now he is in 0-scale, so I am not sure what happens with his project.

I have written a little about my way to the Peavine on my blog.

HELLO FROm THE USA

Hello KnuT

i am simply amazed at people in different countries that are modeling the "Peavine".  I am assuming that you know Paul. I guess my advantage is, that i can go to "Mobest yard or any other location on the line  any time i need to too. How far along are you? Do you have pics? If you do, i would like to see them. you can send them to vpsnaz@msn.com.  If you have questions about the line, do not hesitate to ask, i will help my fellow modelers, especially the ones that are sooooo far away.

i really don't like to assume but, you do know that it is BNSF's line now. still see ATSF motive power in yellow & blue but, they are patched for BNSF.

anyway if you can log into www.trainlife.com/ bnsf6951. there you will see more pics & some railfanning on the Peavine

By the way what is your name?

  Keep in touch....
